NOTE: This section is under constant update. It's a brainstorm and quick documentation of the process "on the fly."
Today we will work on the following:
- Discover your group members, Endangered Animal Species, and iPad
- Explore the resources on Sci-Wiki-Tific that will help you
- Explore the resources in your iPad's "PSA Project" folder
- Pick a theme for your PSA in iMovie
- You will choose from the following themes:
- Adventure
- Coming of Age
- Narrative
- Romance
- Start add your PSA credits
DAY___ We will work on the following:
- Finding more information about your endangered animal species using Sci-Wiki-Tific and your iPad
- How to collect pictures from the internet.
DAY We work on key word searches.
When you search for a topic, you type in a search bar.
Then you discover interesting information.
So, you search for more information.
DAY _ Introduce the graphic organizer
Watch my example with the sea otter. I search "sea otter." Then I find out about the "Exxon Valdez oil spill. I think to myself, "I wonder what this oil spill is about" and why it matters for the sea otter. So I search again, for "sea otter + Exxon Valdez."
Mini-Lessons:
- Introducing the rubric (continue reinforcing this).
- How to take notes
- Endangered animal graphic organizer model
- Using resources from a book (bullets, citation, my words)
- Preview all the trailers: choose one to use--> music and format, Which trailer matches your PSA's message?
- Which iMovie Trailer templates create emotional response?
- Determining the number of images required for your PSA
- Developing the key facts to use from all the information
- Create a PSA purpose: littering-gyre, research-NOAA, pollution prevention
- Making an Ocean PSA folder on the iPad--> put your images into this folder
- Going Green Frizzle Kit --> ways people conserve resources, just like the ocean is a resource for us
- Introducing Note Taking Skills
- Explore iMovie:
- How to do a Key word search: for images and for text info
- How and why to include a Citation.
- Using Transition Words
- Developing a story arc

- Translating the PSA into other language
- Export to camera roll, create a new project (not new trailer), insert the trailer, and record audio translation (which has already been transcribed from English into the appropriate other language.
- OR, after publishing the English PSA to Vimeo, go back into the trailer you created, remove the English words, and replace the English with hte other language. This will happen after translating the words on the iMovie Trailer template (or paper).
Logistics to do/Ideas
- Higher level students can use the iMovie on the Mac computers:
- Do the PSA from the first person-->
- Set up iPad folder for PSA resources
- Flickr link: NOAA images
- sounds dots ocean book

Subject Area: Literacy through Science
CCLS: 4.RIT.2, 4.RIT.9, 4.W.4
Objective: SWBAT to use linking words as transitions in info.
Activity:
1. Do Now: Ask yourselves “where did we leave off?” and continue.
2. Model how to use linking words in your template. Model below graphic organizer between sections to create an iMovie story Arc. What is the purpose of the PSA? I must remember this! Use our graphic organizer. 3. Work with groups where they are. 3 groups each for Czarka/Binuya.
Differentiation: Work with lower group. Incorporate sequence words.
Assessment: How effectively did students record key info?
Follow Up: Introduce the rubric
