The Virtual PS 48 Title III After School Program for the 2020-2021 school year focuses on accelerating the English language acquisition for English Language Learners (ELLs) and at risk immigrant students who may have a home language of English as well. The program centers on developing content knowledge aligned to the New York City Dept. of Education (NYCDOE) social studies and science scope and sequence, in support of Advanced Literacies. This will provide the academic vocabulary and literacy skills to be successful for grade level demands, whether tasks or formative assessments in literacy, in particular for the Spring 2021 NYSESLAT assessment. The program is a successful model for ENL learning. Assessment data collected at the beginning, middle and end of the program demonstrates that each year students in the program make accelerated English acquisition and academic content learning gains.
Throughout the program students learn English through hands on science activities. They will also engage in physical literacy activities as part of NYRR's Rising New York Runners program. This includes investigating topics like the weather, archeology, gardening, and plant life. All of this while reading books and articles, listening to videos and simulations, speaking and presenting information, and writing about their scientific ideas. In English! And we help your child with their first language also. Students become producers of content, not just consumers of content, by creating projects for authentic 21st century audiences. The program's students hail from across the globe, including Yemen, Senegal, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Peru, Honduras, Guinea, and so on. The program will take place at virtually this school year.
These are the tentative English units that your child will explore through science and physical literacy. They are subject to change based on student interests.
Your child will use different innovative resources, both online and hands on, to gain real skills to experiment with science, math, and learn English! TIP: Save your child's digital learning platform accounts in your phone or in a notebook.
If it was misplaced, just contact the program teachers via the Remind app.
Sessions will take place on Zoom.
