Program Overview

The PS 48 Title III After School Program for the 2023-2024 school year focuses on accelerating the English language acquisition for English Language Learners (ELLs). The program centers on developing content knowledge aligned to the New York City Dept. of Education (NYCDOE) social studies and science scope and sequence, in support of the Advanced Literacies. This will provide the academic vocabulary and literacy skills to be successful for grade level demands, whether tasks or formative assessments in literacy, in particular for the Spring 2024 NYSESLAT assessment. The program is a successful model for ENL learning. Assessment data collected at the beginning, middle and end of the program demonstrates that each year students in the program make accelerated English acquisition and academic content learning gains.

Throughout the program students learn English through hands on science activities.  This includes investigating topics like the weather, archeology, gardening, and plant life.  All of this while reading books and articles, listening to videos and simulations, speaking and presenting information, and writing about their scientific ideas. In English!  And we help your child with their first language also.  Students become producers of content, not just consumers of content, by creating projects for authentic 21st century audiences.  They will also engage in physical literacy activities as part of NYRR's Rising New York Runners program.  The program's students hail from across the globe, including Colombia, Burkina Faso, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Peru, Honduras, Guinea, and so on
