A very interesting paper demonstrated that patients who undertake knee replacement are unable to utilize their knee joints after 6 to 18 months post-surgery. The authors observed that patients used their hip extensors further as a potential strategy to deviate load from their knees. This observation was also associated with a larger contribution from ankle plantarflexors when workrate was increased whilst cycling. It is important to observe that these patients seem unable to fully engage their knee extensors after surgery, which suggests that, the rehabilitation of these patients may need to provide further attention to the limited engagement of the knee muscles.
