A recent study examined the effect of controlling force direction on mechanical force effectiveness, which is a component of pedalling technique. They observed that, when cyclists attempted to maximise force direction they were unable to recruit their muscles maximaly. This is a very interesting outcome as it helps to illustrate that attempting to circle the cranks when pedaling is not an efficient way of cycling. Amongst the reasons is the challenge to the central nervous system in activating and deactivating the muscles in a timely manner.
