Even though cycling has very clear benefit in improving cardiovascular function, it may not be the golden eggs for all illnesses. An example seems to be treatment of osteoarthritis, in which stationary cycling has long been used as a preferred mode of exercise. However, a recent meta-analysis demonstrated that cycling is not better than other forms of exercise. In addition, stationary cycling does not promote improvements in balance or gains in muscular strength, which are critical to patients with OA. We should look at these findings with the purpose of exploring how and when adding stationary cycling is appropriate for treating OA rather than using a blanket approach.
