We all know that exercise, including cycling, is beneficial for the improvement of overall health. One of the measures of long-term health benefits from cycling has been demonstrated in a meta-analysis, which illustrated that people that engage in cycling live longer. Those cycling for longer and at higher intensity were less likely to die from various illnesses. However, when looking at cardiovascular health, a 'sweat spot' was observed, which sat at 15 MET-h/week. This means that, cycling too much or too intensively may not be optimal to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, get on a bike if you are not exercising enough but be careful to cycle no more than what is recommended for optimising health.
