A couple of recent papers (du Toit 1 and du Toit 2) described that the history of chronic disease (e.g. cardiovascular disease) seems to increase the likelihood of non-traumatic injuries in cyclists. In addition, the use of analgesic medication before or during a race further increased the risk of injuries. As the authors described that 2.5% of cyclists report a non-traumatic pain per year and that 50% of these injuries affect the knee joint, it is also important to assess other risk factors that have not been previously identified, such as cardiovascular health. Another example was the rapid increase in weekly training frequency, which has been suggested in the past to play a key role in the development o injuries in cyclists. These papers provide important evidence that there is still work to be done in order to determine the key drivers of non-traumatic injuries in cyclists.
