Bir olayla ilgili küçük de olsa bir belirti veya dedikodu varsa, o olayın gerçekleşmiş olma ihtimali çok yüksektir. Şüphelerin bir temeli olduğunu vurgulamak için kullanılır. 

If there are rumors or signs that something is true, there is usually a reason for them. It suggests that suspicions often have a basis in fact. 

Hem Türk hem de İngiliz kültüründe "neden-sonuç" ilişkisi doğadaki temel bir elementle (ateş ve duman) sembolize edilmiştir.  Dumanın ateşin bir sonucu olması gibi, belirtilerin de bir gerçeğin sonucu olduğu evrensel bir mantıkla kabul edilir.
