To celebrate and focus on the successes of the Hubble Telescope, the Astronomical League and NASA are presenting a NASA Special Observing Award Challenge.
There are two levels to the challenge, each requiring observations and outreach.
Silver award (certificates only):
One or more outreach activities must be done during one of the months for which you submit for the silver award; to spread the word about the Hubble Telescope and its mission. An outreach activity is anything that spreads the word to others about the Hubble Telescope, its 35th anniversary, or this challenge. This might be on a website, at a meeting, an outreach event, or on a blog.
The same outreach activity may be used for multiple months at the silver level. We encourage you to do more outreach activities to meet the requirements of the gold award.
The observations must be done during the specific month for each silver certificate.
Each month’s observation targets will be listed the prior month. There is a list for northern observers and also a list for southern observers.
You must observe at least one of the objects from either list each month to earn a silver certificate.
Sketch or image the object(s).
Attempt to identify the part of your sketch or image that corresponds to a part of the Hubble Telescope image. (See links in the References section to access the Hubble image gallery.)
Submission Requirements:
Outreach Events
Date and time
What was the outreach activity
Goup and group size
Observations
Date and time
Details of instruments and filters used
Sketches or Images of objects
Gold award (certificate and pin):
Over the span of 2025, do four or more outreach activities to spread the word about the Hubble Telescope and its mission. An outreach activity is anything that spreads the word to others about the Hubble Telescope, its 35th anniversary, or this challenge. This might be on a website, at a meeting, an outreach event, or on a blog.
Observe four or more objects for each month from the lists and submit them monthly.
Sketch or image all of the objects you observe.
Attempt to identify the part of your sketch or image that corresponds to a part of the Hubble Telescope image. (See links in the References section to access the Hubble image gallery.)
I should mention that I'm very red-green color blind. The colors below look great to me, but maybe not so for those with normal color vision.
The newest monthly activities are at the top. Earlier months are below.

The part(s) of my images that correspond to the Hubble's view:
(in some cases two Hubble images can be found in my field)
There isn't a great deal of similarity between my images and those of Hubble due to the wide difference in fields of view. The FOVs for the two Slooh telescopes used this month are 43x43 arcminutes. Hubble's WFPC2 field is approximately 2.6 arcminutes by 2.6 arcminutes for the Wide Field Camera portion. I do get the impression based on some of the stair steps on the Hubble images that they are mosaics made up of multiple images. An image of C96 from the Hubble site is below for reference.
My images are very similar to those taken by the Deep Sky Survey (DSS) as shown to the left.
The DSS image needs to be greatly enlarged to be able to see where the two Hubble images found on the C96 web page are in the DSS's open cluster image. The outlines of the Hubble images can be seen below.
Notice the stair stepping of the Hubble location in the upper left. The image may be a 4x5 frame mosiac.
