Naked Eye and Binocular Certifications completed 8/31/2022
Solar Neighborhood Program via Imaging (Imaging - 100 required, 158 observed with all done through imaging.)
To obtain your certificate and pin for the Imaging level of this Observing Program you are required to image 100 of the stars on the list. The observations may include those used for the Naked-Eye and Binocular certifications. If you prefer to image the stars, please identify the nearby stars in your image. You must also complete the three additional tasks for the complete certification. .
1) Observe Barnard’s Star at least 3 times over 12 months and plot its position against other field stars for each observation. At least a magnification of 200x is recommended to make the small positional change of Barnard’s Star more apparent. A chart of the star field is provided in Appendix A.
2) Make an occulting eyepiece using a bar, disk, or half circle and observe the white dwarf companion of either Sirius or Procyon. Make a drawing and try to estimate the separation and position angle to 45 degrees (e.g. north, northeast, east, etc.). At least a magnification of 200x is recommended to make the small separation of the much fainter secondary star from the primary easier to see (2 – 10 seconds for Sirius and 5 seconds for Procyon). A procedure for modifying an eyepiece to make it an occulting eyepiece is provided in Appendix B.
3) Observe the sun using pinhole projection or a sun funnel. Photograph the projection. Include any detail you see.

Scope and Imaging Data:
The entries below are in AL# order. See the Slooh Scope tab above or click here for information on Slooh locations, scopes, presets, and weather/sky condition descriptions. In all images below North is Up and East is to the Left.
Images were taken with a monochrome camera using LRGB filters. In most cases, the L image is presented below. In some cases, the L image was poor/bad/unavailable. That was particularly true with later exposures with the Canary Two scope which was developing issues that eventually led to it being replaced in October 2022. In cases where an R or G-filtered image was used the information is included below.
Image formats and post-processing:
Slooh saves images in two formats: fits and jpgs. Slooh calibrates, stacks, and adjusts gamma based on the preset before saving the image as a jpg. Fits are calibrated, and saved but not stacked.
Note: I've very red/green colorblind so the images below are monochrome.
Right-clicking on an image brings up a larger view in a new window. At the bottom of this page, there's an embedded link to the Google Drive folder where all the images are stored. There are a few more viewing options there vs. the way the images are presented here.

Barnard's Star for a year: July 2022 to July 2023
It took a while but I finally decided that the best way to show Barnard's Star's apparent motion was to plot its measured coordinates over a year along with other stars in the field that were close to it. Barnard's Star is currently between two named stars GAT 771 (J2000 17:57:46.536, +04:47:46.64 ) and Tyc 425-262-1 (J2000 17:57:51.950, +04:42:20.20). Assuming the apparent motion of these two "check" stars is negligible, Barnard's Star should show motion and the "check" stars should not.
Plotting the RAs and Decs for Barnard's Star and the two "check" stars shows that the coordinates of the check stars don't change while Barnard's Star's Dec shows significant DEC movement.

Home-made occulting bar -- aluminum foil and masking tape at the field stop of a cheap Celestron 10mm eyepiece. (I didn't want to risk anything good.)
Blue filter (Kodak #47) to cut down the glare
I talked one of the club members into letting me use the scope. Once I got set up and Sirius A was in focus, I centered it on the edge of the occulting bar and spun the eyepiece until Sirius B was visible in an unobstructed part of the field.
Sirius B is the tiny dot at about 5 o'clock from A in the sketch. Less-than-perfect seeing caused Sirius A to dance around a good deal. Sirius B would come in and out of view as A changed size.
The star diagonal wasn't perfectly aligned with the scope so I'd guesstimate the PA was 30 degrees. Nothing else in the field so no clue about the actual field size or separation between A and B.
3. The Sun with a pinhole:
After trying a number of pinhole options and not really getting any results I opted for a Sun Funnel after their use was approved for the program. The only drawback there is that it requires focusing twice, once with the scope on the projection screen and second with the camera on the screen. Using a scope on a static tripod means that the moving Sun caused the projected image to trail across the screen. Using a handheld Canon T7i at the shortest distance from the projected image was also an adventure. The image below was the best of multiple tries.

Some time after completing the observing program I decided to capture the remainder of the targets on the list. The spreadsheet I use to track my progress and the images of all the targets are below. Since the requirements to label six stars in the field had changed I opted to just circle many of the neighborhood stars below.
