Lewis Swift (February 29, 1820 – January 5, 1913) was the most prolific discoverer of new NGC & IC objects from the Americas. This program requires observing 100 objects selected from Swift’s discoveries. Swift is credited with the discovery of over 1050 NGC & IC objects.
Each observation must include:
Object name, Date and Time (either local or UT), Latitude & Longitude of observing site
Description of the object, including “visibility” per the following ranking: (not required for imaging)
Easy (E): Readily visible with direct vision at “all magnifications”* --* All magnifications that provide sufficient image scale for the object being observed
Moderate (M): Visible with direct vision at all magnifications with difficulty, but easy with averted vision
Difficult (D): Visible with direct vision at some magnifications, visible with averted vision at all magnifications
Very Difficult (VD): Invisible or extremely faint with direct vision, but detectable with averted vision
Instrument used
Magnification (for visual observations)
Seeing & Transparency (for visual observations)
Camera used, Image Details, and the Image (for imaging observations).
The 798 targets of the Swift OP comprise one globular cluster, four planetary nebulae, three diffuse nebulae, and the rest galaxies. The magnitudes range from 9 to almost 17, with sizes between .1 arc minutes and ten that are larger than five arc minutes. The vast majority of the list is small and dim, requiring large scopes and magnification, even via imaging. Simply put, using a SmartScope won't do a very good job.
I'll be using Slooh's scopes to image the required targets. The fields of the Slooh scopes are between 31'x21' to 43'x43'.'. thus slightly smaller than a SeeStar S50. Their apertures range from 14" to 20" and are huge compared to a SeeStar S50.
The images below are in RA order unless multiple targets in a group are split. As many as four images are presented for each target, showing size and location in the Slooh's scope field and then zoomed to enlarge the actual target(s) for a better view. Targets in the same field will be in separate lines and noted as in the same fields.
Most of the targets that I imaged were in fields that were sparse enough that made finding them easy. For the most part, I used the buttons in Siril that drew RA and Dec axes, and labeled the target(s). I’d load the original and plate-solved images into this web page. I'd then zoom into the target so I could show where it was in the field. In really crowded fields, the superimposed names and symbols made finding the targets much more difficult.
Siril has the ability to use scripts. One of the scripts is called Galaxy Annotations. When you run the script on an image it finds all the galaxies, marks, and displays their image. The script can be customized with a large number of galaxy catalogs. It makes verifying galaxies much easier in the images. I decided to run the script to identify all Messier, NGC, and IC objects in busy fields (ones with 5 or more of the program’s listings. I’ve included the data for the busy fields in RA order, but have place these labeled identifications at the end of this page. The areas include those around NGC 6055 (8), NGC 6056 (7), NGC 6470 (6), and NGC 6592 (6). Doing this should make it easier to verify that I have the correct location for the targets.

When I first saw the announcement of the Swift OP I figured I could look through past Slooh targets and use them. The only set I had for NGC 48 was taken with Slooh's Chile Three. This scope has a FOV that is about twice as wide as a SeeStar S50 and slightly less tall. The three targets are small in this field, but I thought I'd include them because the coordinates won't be convenient for a while. They do support the coordinator's comments in an email about tiny objects in a large FOV with smart scopes. I won't use Slooh's Canary Three for any future targets but a zoom of the original image isn't too bad.

The areas include those around NGC 6055 (9), NGC 6056 (6), NGC 6470 (6), and NGC 6592 (6). Doing this should make it easier to verify that I have the correct location for the targets.
