Cobalt's Past

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Born to Emma and Andrew Durand, Cobalt grew up as an only child.  His home life and relationship with his parents was strong, happy, and healthy.  They often did activities together, and even though Emma and Andrew were busy people, they always made sure to carve out time for Cobalt.  He was always very studious, but when he was younger, he focused on studying things he enjoyed and that pertained to his personal interests.  He never had many friends, due to his reserved and studious nature, but that didn't mean he was socially inept.  Cobalt has always been very observant, and would talk and interact if needed, but he just preferred to keep to himself.

However, everything changed when his sister, Millie, was born.  He was just 7 years old when Emma died due to already present health complications that were just made worse by pregnancy and childbirth.  After Millie was born, but Emma died, Andrew started to spiral into a very long and difficult depressive episode.  Cobalt was unsure as to why Andrew no longer came to play with him, or why he always kept himself locked in his room or study, but it saddened him.

With Andrew both physically and emotionally unavailable, Cobalt had to quickly learn to not only fend for himself, but to raise and take care of Millie.  While he had already been quite independent for his age, nothing could have prepared him for what it was like having to raise two kids at once.

Millie was always a problem child. She always seemed to be screaming and crying, and the tiniest things would set her off.  During her outbursts, or just at random, she would become aggressive towards Cobalt.

Over the years, Cobalt became a very bitter shut-in.  All the years he spent having to fend for himself and Millie had made him that way. He adapted a survival of the fittest type of mindset, and of course he'd still look after Millie, but once she started growing older, he started to leave her to her own devices as well.  This is where her hatred started to grow as well. Not just for her family and situation, but towards Cobalt as well.  She just thought he was so cool, and desperately wanted his attention, but he was always busy studying or just didn’t want to see her. It broke her little heart a lot.  As she grew even older, their relationship evolved into an intense and very aggressive rivalry.  Cobalt found her to be more of a nuisance than anything, and this was just her messed up way to cry for his attention.

Cobalt decided he had enough.  He wanted to run away, to start fresh, and he was under the impression that no one would even care if he left anyways.  He was 19 the night that he left.

He was passing the kitchen when he saw Millie, probably just messing around in there.  She perked up as she saw him pass, and asked where he was going.  He hesitated, but he told her he was leaving. Millie frowned.  She began to scream at him, calling him names, and cursing him out.  He didn’t respond. When she didn't get the response she was looking for, she grabbed a glass cup off of the counter and threw it at him.

He fell back against the wall, blood and shattered pieces of glass everywhere.  The room was silent for a few moments.  He finally looked up at her, eyes wide and mouth agape.  She asked him one final time if he was just going to leave her, and without a word, he stood up and hurried outside of the house.  This is the moment that she completely gave up on him.

Cobalt spent the next week walking and taking buses to get as far away as possible from his home.  But by the time he got there, he was unrecognizable.  It had been a particularly cold winter, and in his hurry to leave, he never got the chance to put on any proper winter gear, or dress up the new, massive scar on his face.  He was staggering to death's door when he passed by a humble little Starbucks.  A sign was posted in the window saying, "Come in from the cold, have a coffee".

As he read it, vision hazy, all he saw was the first part.  He rushed inside the establishment.  Up until that point, he practically hadn’t stopped travelling, so all he could do was sit down and stare in front of him. He had no money left to buy anything, so he was just hoping to stay in the warmth for as long as possible.  He was shivering uncontrollably, his lips were thin and blue, and the tips of his fingers had turned black.  He watched from the corner of his eye as what looked to be the manager began to approach him.  He assumed it was to throw him out, so he quickly gathered his thoughts and prepared for the worst, but as the manager approached, he noticed that she had something in her hand.  The side of her mouth was upturned in a smile as she set the cup of coffee down onto the table and sat down.  Cobalt explained that he had no money and couldn't possibly stay, but the manager insisted that it was on the house.

She introduced herself as Alex, and with a chuckle told Cobalt that it had actually passed the closing time.  If his face hadn't been frozen in the same expression, he would've been incredibly embarrassed.  As they continued to talk, Cobalt felt at ease for the first time in a while. He slowly begins to open up to Alex, telling her about his situation and how he ended up there.  By the time the coffee was finished, Alex wordlessly stood up.  Cobalt once again assumes this is his cue to leave, but Alex stops him before he could leave.  She offers Cobalt a place to stay until he can get back on track.  At first, he declines, but Alex just glares at him and he relents.

Very slowly, but surely, he begins to recover.  He takes up a job at that same Starbucks and lives with Alex until he has an opportunity to leave.  Cobalt actually lived with Alex up until Doom and Marion wanted all three of them to get an apartment together. Alex cried both sad and happy tears when Cobalt told her that he was moving out.

the end thats basically his lore up until he meets doom and marion and the rest is hstoryrr
