VISION STATEMENT (Last Updated 07JUL2021)
It should be EASY to do the right thing! We should increase incentives and decrease barriers to participation in education. We are all busy, putting together a morning report should not be a burden on people.
Part of becoming more senior (senior residents and attendings) means teaching and educating. Senior residents and attending staff should take the lead in resident education.
Being on away rotations is tough! You miss a lot of academics. There should be a way to see what you missed and get the cliff-notes of what everyone learned that month.
Residency training should involve a systematic approach to learning - we need to reimplement a standardized curriculum to avoid taking a shotgun approach to topic selection.
Becoming a physician involves more than just learning medicine. We need to recognize this, and integrate it into our curriculum. This is specifically true when it comes to healthcare disparities and bias.
Becoming a MILITARY physician involves more than just learning medicine. We need to recognize this, and integrate it into our curriculum. A straight-through resident should not have only ODS to lean on to move into the operational setting after graduation.
Adult learning is different from school learning! Our teachers should recognize this and incorporate it into their presentations.
PRINCIPLES OF ADULT LEARNING (Andragogy)
Adult learners...
Need to be INVOLVED (active > passive learning)
Have PRIOR EXPERIENCES (recognize this and engage learners to share experiences)
Need IMMEDIACY and RELEVANCE (how does this affect me and my day to day?)
Are PROBLEM-CENTERED (focus on solving problems, not lecturing)
Have SHORT ATTENTION (change things up every 15 or so minutes)
Change the tempo or pace of the presentation
Present a case!
Break into small groups!
Pair off and present to the group!
Quizzes, games, (PollEv, Kahoot)
