GI Bill

****August 14, 2023****

Leadership Mess,

Good Afternoon,

Requesting widest dissemination:

As you may have heard, there have been some recent changes to the law regarding the Montgomery GI Bill. The law changed the decision window to opt-in/opt-out to a 90-day window between their 180th and 270th day in the Navy. Sailors are still receiving training at RTC at about week five (5), however, the decision to opt-in or out is now decentralized since the affected Sailors are spread throughout the Navy.

Following the law change on 5 January 2023, we have Sailors who are well into their 90-day decision window. If our Sailors are not properly counseled on the MGIB and given the opportunity to opt out, they will be subject to $100 monthly deductions for up to a total $1,200.

It’s important for all of us to engage with our Sailors, ensuring they are educated on the process and make their decision in time.

I have asked Ozzy to send out to the CCC network as well who have the ability to run reports in NSIPS to track/assist who is inside their 90-day decision window (The attached PDF provides greater detail on that report function).

The team provided the attached power point for you and your Sailors…it also compares it with the Post 9/11.

NOTE:  The NAVADMIN is currently being drafted but wanted to get this info to you soonest.

We appreciate your support and our SME’s are standing by to assist with any questions/concerns.

V/r,

Del
