Bread Ends
If they were humans they would be
humble, selfless, conscientious,
with a touch of crusty manner,
uncomplaining while fulfilling
their function.
Usually ignored and neglected,
though the job cannot get done without them,
they’re the plebeians among the patricians,
most often discarded,
like workers designated as no longer wanted
after they’ve served their masters’ purpose.
Like their human counterparts,
may they sense some satisfaction
from the pleasure that they give
to some of us
in our quest for something greater
than their white-bread cousins can provide.
