8th Global Language

Week of June 8

German: This week, students will be given their last activities. There will be three "last activities" posted on the google classroom. Should students find they have extra time, full credit will be awarded for any missing assignments made up. Please remember to send an email to indicate that work has been made up and needs to be rechecked. Thank you for all of your hard work!

Week of June 1

German: This week, students will be asked to choose which Duolingo modules they would like to study, the expectation being that they earn 150 XP points, which is equivalent to about 15 minutes of study per day over five days. Students will also be assigned a new type of assignment: Jabbalab. A login and password will be provided. I will ask students for feedback on how this platform works for them as a Remote Learning tool. Our cultural focus this week will be an exploration of how Germany is handling the reopening of schools as restrictions due to the pandemic are lifting. Students will be asked to engage with content I post on the Google classroom, then respond to that content by either writing an analysis in English, creating a video response to share, or signing up for a live conversation with me in small groups. Bleib froh und gesund!

Italian: Students will not be introduced to any new material this week in order to wrap-up for the end of the year. Students will have 2 “enrichment” activities to complete (on a teacher-provided website), and then should utilize the week to complete/re-do and submit/resubmit any work that they have not completed (or completed incorrectly this Trimester in order to earn full credit.

This just means students will be asked to complete a short review lesson to keep their skills fresh. If a student missed the Duolingo module when it was originally assigned, completing it now will count towards the original, and this assignment. Viel Glueck und viel Spass! Good luck and have fun!

For a cultural focus, students will explore German popular music on our class website, choosing a favorite artist and song. Students will find an English and German copy of the song lyrics online, then use them to create a vocab list of 10 words and/or phrases they learn from the song (students may use google translate and Leo-English German dictionary to help them build a vocab list). On Friday, May 22nd we will have a virtual class using Google Meet - a Gimkit Battle! Students are also asked to check Aspen this week and make up any missing assignments for full credit.

Week of May 11th

German: Students will focus on using verbs (in the present tense), forming questions and statements, negating statements, the many ways to form plurals of nouns in German (there are 6!), and using adjectives to describe things. The majority of the work around these topics will be done in Duolingo (5 modules), with optional Quizlet and Gimkit assignments. To strengthen students' ability to hear and understand German in authentic contexts, students will complete two listening modules in the Nico's Weg series ("Haushaltsarbeit" and "Was macht dir Spass?"). For our cultural focus, students will be exploring the significance of V-E Day, and researching the way Europeans are celebrating this year under quarantine. We will hold a virtual meet this week on Friday, May 15th, just to check in and share one thing we love about quarantine, and one thing we dislike about quarantine (in German!).
