If you manufacture, import, or sell telecom and communication equipment in India, you may be wondering how to get TEC Certification in India. This certification is mandatory for several telecom products before they can be legally sold in the Indian market. Without approval, businesses may face delays, penalties, or restrictions on product sales.
Understanding how to get TEC Certification in India helps manufacturers prepare the right documents, complete product testing, and avoid unnecessary certification delays. Whether you are an Indian manufacturer or an overseas supplier, following the correct process is essential for regulatory compliance.

What Is TEC Certification in India?
The Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC), operating under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), is responsible for issuing technical standards and certification for telecom equipment. Through the Mandatory Testing and Certification of Telecom Equipment (MTCTE) scheme, eligible telecom products must be tested and certified before entering the Indian market.
Knowing how to get TEC Certification in India is important because the certification confirms that telecom equipment meets India's technical, safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and network performance requirements.
Why Is TEC Certification Required?
TEC certification protects telecom networks by ensuring that only compliant and safe equipment is introduced into the market.
Benefits include:
Legal approval to sell telecom products in India
Compliance with DoT regulations
Improved product reliability
Increased customer confidence
Better market acceptance
Reduced risk of regulatory action
Easier participation in government and corporate tenders
For manufacturers, certification demonstrates commitment to quality and regulatory compliance.
Which Products Require TEC Certification?
Several telecom products fall under the MTCTE framework, including:
Mobile Phones
Routers
Modems
GPON Equipment
Optical Network Terminals
Smart Communication Devices
Wireless Access Equipment
IoT Communication Devices
Telecom Switches
Base Stations
Network Equipment
Before applying, businesses should confirm whether their product category is covered under current TEC notifications.
How to Get TEC Certification in India?
Understanding how to get TEC Certification in India becomes much easier when the process is divided into clear steps.
Step 1: Identify the Applicable Product Category
The first step is determining whether your product falls under the MTCTE scheme. Each telecom product is classified under a specific Essential Requirement (ER).
Selecting the correct category helps avoid application rejection.
Step 2: Create an MTCTE Portal Account
Applicants must register on the official MTCTE portal by providing company details and authorized representative information.
Accurate registration information is essential for future communication.
Step 3: Prepare the Required Documents
Documentation is one of the most important stages of certification.
Common documents include:
Company registration certificate
Product technical specifications
User manual
Circuit diagrams
Product photographs
Test reports (if applicable)
Authorization letter
Manufacturing details
Proper documentation significantly reduces processing delays.
Step 4: Product Testing
The equipment must be tested according to applicable Essential Requirements at TEC-designated or recognized laboratories.
Testing verifies compliance with:
Safety requirements
Electromagnetic compatibility
Radio frequency performance
Technical standards
Network interoperability
Successful testing is mandatory before certification can proceed.
Step 5: Submit the Online Application
After completing product testing, applicants submit the online application together with supporting documents and laboratory reports.
Any errors at this stage may lead to clarification requests from TEC.
Step 6: Technical Evaluation
TEC experts review the submitted documents and laboratory reports.
If additional information is required, applicants receive observations that must be answered within the specified timeframe.
Step 7: Certificate Issuance
Once the application satisfies all regulatory requirements, TEC issues the certification.
After approval, the certified telecom product can be legally marketed in India.
What Documents Are Required?
Businesses planning how to get TEC Certification in India should prepare the following documents:
Company incorporation documents
GST certificate (if applicable)
Technical specifications
Product datasheet
Product photographs
Test reports
Quality management information
Authorization letter
Factory information
Declaration forms
Additional documents may be required depending on the product category.
