India’s electronics market is growing faster than ever in 2026. From smartphones and LED lighting products to laptops, smart devices, CCTV systems, and power adapters, electronic products are now a major part of India’s manufacturing and import ecosystem. However, before these products can legally enter the Indian market, businesses must comply with mandatory BIS CRS registration requirements.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) introduced the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) to ensure that electronic and IT products sold in India meet prescribed safety and quality standards. Today, BIS CRS registration is mandatory for a wide range of electronics and IT equipment manufactured or imported into India.

For manufacturers, importers, startups, OEM brands, and foreign exporters, understanding the BIS CRS process is essential to avoid customs delays, penalties, shipment rejection, or product restrictions.

This complete 2026 guide explains everything businesses need to know about BIS CRS Registration for Electronics products in India and how experienced consultants like UMSPCS help businesses complete the certification process smoothly.

What is BIS CRS Registration?

BIS CRS stands for Bureau of Indian Standards – Compulsory Registration Scheme.

The scheme was introduced by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to regulate the safety and quality of electronic and IT products sold in India. Under this scheme, manufacturers must test their products in BIS-recognized laboratories and obtain registration before importing, manufacturing, or selling regulated products in India.

Once approved, the manufacturer can use the BIS Standard Mark and registration number on the product or packaging.

Why BIS CRS Registration is Important in 2026

India is strengthening product quality regulations through stricter compliance enforcement and expanding Quality Control Orders (QCOs). Electronics and IT products are among the most heavily regulated categories.

BIS CRS registration helps:

• Ensure consumer safety

• Prevent substandard electronics

• Improve product reliability

• Support legal market access

• Build customer trust

• Prevent customs clearance issues

Without valid BIS CRS approval, products may be stopped at customs, removed from online marketplaces, or prohibited from sale in India.

Who Needs BIS CRS Registration?

BIS CRS registration applies to:

• Indian manufacturers

• Foreign manufacturers exporting to India

• Importers

• OEM manufacturers

• Brand owners

• E-commerce sellers

• Amazon and Flipkart sellers

Even if the product is manufactured outside India, BIS CRS registration is still mandatory before import or sale in India.

• Mobile phones

• LED lights

• Power banks

• Laptops and notebooks

• Smart TVs

• Monitors

• Power adapters

• USB devices

• CCTV cameras

• Smart watches

• Wireless keyboards and mice

• Set-top boxes

Currently, more than 75 product categories are covered under the BIS CRS framework.

BIS CRS Registration Process in India

1. Product Identification

The first step is determining whether the product falls under the CRS mandatory list and identifying the applicable Indian Standard (IS code).

Incorrect classification may result in rejection or delays.

2. Product Testing

The product must be tested in a BIS-recognized laboratory in India according to the applicable Indian Standard.

Testing verifies:

• Electrical safety

• Product performance

• Technical compliance

• Quality standards

Testing is one of the most important stages of the process.

3. Documentation Preparation

Manufacturers must prepare technical and legal documentation, including:

• Test reports

• Product specifications

• Factory details

• Trademark certificate

• Business registration documents

• ISO certificate

• Authorization letters

• AIR documents (for foreign manufacturers)

Proper documentation is essential for faster approval.

4. Online BIS Application Filing

After testing and documentation preparation, the BIS CRS application is submitted online.

The application includes:

• Test reports

• Technical files

• Product details

• Manufacturing information

• Compliance declarations

5. BIS Review and Verification

BIS officials review the application and may raise technical queries or request clarification.

Businesses must respond quickly to avoid delays.

6. Grant of CRS Registration

Once BIS approves the application, the manufacturer receives the CRS registration number and can legally use the BIS Standard Mark on the product.

The product can then be legally imported, manufactured, distributed, or sold in India.

Difference Between BIS CRS and ISI Certification

Many businesses confuse CRS registration with ISI certification, but they are different schemes.
