If you manufacture or import electronic and IT products covered under the BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) understanding the CRS registration fees is important before starting the application process. The total cost is not limited to the BIS application fee. It can also include processing charges, laboratory testing expenses, additional test reports, renewal charges, and applicable taxes.
The exact amount depends on the product, applicable Indian Standard, number of test reports, and the type of application. A BIS consultant such as UMSPCS can help manufacturers understand the applicable charges and prepare the application correctly.
What Is BIS CRS Registration?
BIS CRS registration is a mandatory compliance requirement for certain electronic and IT products sold in India. Under the scheme, manufacturers need to demonstrate that their products conform to the relevant Indian Standard.
The process generally involves product testing at a BIS-recognized laboratory, preparation of technical documents, submission of the application and supporting documents, and scrutiny by BIS.
Because the fee structure can change, applicants should always verify the latest charges before making payment. BIS's CRS portal currently shows transactions involving application fees, annual licence fees, processing fees, inclusion charges and renewal charges.
CRS Registration Fees: What Does the Cost Include?
The main components that businesses should consider are:
1. BIS Application Fee
The application fee is generally ₹1,000 for a CRS application. Recent CRS records also show an application fee of ₹1,000 plus 18% GST in actual transactions.
2. BIS Processing Fee
The processing fee is another important part of the CRS registration cost. Recent BIS CRS transaction records show a ₹25,000 processing fee on a yearly basis for relevant applications.
Applicants should not assume that every CRS application will have exactly the same final cost because the applicable fee can depend on the type and scope of the application.
3. Laboratory Testing Charges
Laboratory testing is separate from the BIS government fee. The product must generally be tested against the applicable Indian Standard at a BIS-recognized laboratory.
The testing cost varies according to:
Product category
Applicable Indian Standard
Number of parameters
Product configuration
Number of samples
Laboratory selected
Therefore, laboratory charges should be included when calculating the overall CRS registration budget.

4. Additional Test Reports
If more than one test report is required, additional charges may apply. Current CRS transaction data shows separate charges for additional test reports, with the amount depending on the application and report.
This is particularly important for manufacturers with several product models, variants or configurations.
CRS Inclusion Fees
If a manufacturer already has a CRS registration and wants to add another product or applicable scope, an inclusion application may be required.
Recent CRS records show an inclusion processing charge of ₹30,000 inclusive of one test report in applicable transactions, while additional test reports can attract separate charges.
The final amount should therefore be checked against the latest BIS fee requirements before submitting an inclusion application.
CRS Renewal Fees
CRS registration is not something manufacturers should treat as a one-time compliance activity. Renewal and annual fee requirements need to be monitored carefully.
Recent CRS transaction records show:
Renewal application fee: ₹1,000
Annual licence fee: ₹1,000
Processing fee: ₹25,000
Applicable GST and other charges, wherever applicable
BIS has also issued revised provisions concerning licence validity, renewal and annual fee payment under CRS in May 2026, so businesses should verify the latest requirements before renewal.
Why Does CRS Registration Cost Differ From Product to Product?
There is no single fixed amount that every manufacturer should use as the complete CRS registration fees.
The total expenditure can vary because of:
Product testing: Different products require different tests.
Number of models: More models or variants may increase testing and documentation requirements.
Additional reports: Multiple reports can increase the overall processing cost.
Inclusion applications: Adding products to an existing registration involves separate charges.
Renewal: Renewal involves applicable government fees and processing charges.
GST: Applicable taxes increase the amount payable.
Consultancy: If a company hires a BIS consultant, professional service charges are separate from BIS fees.
How Can a BIS Consultant Help With CRS Registration?
Applying for CRS registration involves more than simply paying the government fee. Manufacturers need to identify the correct Indian Standard, select an appropriate testing laboratory, prepare technical documents and submit accurate information.
UMSPCS, as a BIS consultant, can assist businesses with the CRS registration process, including documentation, product-standard identification, laboratory coordination, application preparation and compliance support.
Professional assistance can be particularly useful for foreign manufacturers and businesses handling multiple models because documentation or testing mistakes can result in delays and additional expenses.
How to Reduce Unnecessary CRS Registration Expenses
Businesses can take several practical steps to control their compliance costs:
Confirm the applicable Indian Standard before testing.
Select the correct product model and configuration.
Prepare technical documents before submitting the application.
Check laboratory requirements carefully.
Avoid unnecessary duplicate testing.
Keep track of renewal deadlines.
Verify the latest BIS fee structure before payment.
The objective should not simply be finding the cheapest route. A properly planned application can help prevent avoidable retesting, document corrections and delays.
Conclusion
The CRS registration fees depend on several factors, including application charges, processing fees, laboratory testing, additional reports, inclusion requirements, renewal charges and applicable taxes. Recent BIS CRS records show ₹1,000 application and annual licence fees and ₹25,000 processing charges in applicable transactions, while inclusion and additional testing can add further costs.
Since BIS consultancy and fee provisions can be updated, manufacturers should confirm the current applicable charges before beginning their application.
UMSPCS can support manufacturers and importers with CRS compliance and help them understand the documentation, testing and registration requirements.
