If you sell electronics in India, sooner or later you’ll hear the term BIS CRS. The first thing most people notice is the paperwork. It isn’t impossible, but it is fussy, and one wrong file can cost you weeks. At UMSPCS, we’ve seen the same mistakes repeat, so here is a plain walkthrough of the documents involved and how to avoid the common slip-ups.
A quick word on BIS CRS
CRS stands for Compulsory Registration Scheme. It’s run by the Bureau of Indian Standards and covers a long list of electronic and IT products, such as LED lights, power adapters, mobile phones, smartwatches, Bluetooth speakers, CCTV cameras and chargers. If your product is on the notified list, you can’t legally manufacture, import or sell it in India without the Standard Mark and a registration number.
The process is mostly BIS CRS document-driven. BIS doesn’t visit you to inspect your product at the start. It reads what you submit and decides from there, so your documents carry a lot of weight.
The core BIS CRS documents
Requirements shift a little depending on the product category and whether you’re an Indian or foreign manufacturer. This is the usual checklist.
1. Test report from a BIS-recognized lab. This is the heart of the application. Your product has to be tested against the relevant Indian Standard (the IS number for your category) in a lab that BIS has recognised. Reports from random or unrecognised labs get rejected, however good the results look.
2. Application form and declaration. You fill this in on the BIS portal. It includes the product details, model names, ratings and a declaration that you’ll follow the scheme’s rules. Small spelling differences between this form and your other papers can trigger queries, so keep everything consistent.
3. Factory and manufacturing details. BIS wants to know where the product is made. Expect to provide the factory address, a business registration or license copy, and contact details. For foreign factories, the paperwork should be clear and in English.
4. Authorised Indian Representative (AIR) documents. Overseas manufacturers must appoint an AIR based in India. You’ll need an authorisation letter from the manufacturer naming the AIR, plus the AIR’s own identity and business proof. The AIR is responsible for dealing with BIS, so choose someone reliable.
5. Technical documents. Depending on the product, this can include circuit diagrams, block diagrams, a bill of materials, a critical components list and user manuals. These show BIS that the product in the test report matches the product you intend to sell.
6. Product photos and label details. Clear photographs of the product, its nameplate and its marking are usually required. Labels should carry the right ratings and model number, and later the Standard Mark with your registration number.
7. Trademark documents. If you sell under a brand that isn’t your own legal name, you’ll need proof of ownership or a trademark authorisation letter. People often forget this one until BIS asks for it.

Mistakes that slow people down
Most delays come from small things rather than big ones.
Model name mismatches. The test report says one thing, the application says another, and the label says a third. Make them identical.
Wrong lab or outdated standard. Standards get revised. A test against an old version may not be accepted.
Unreadable scans. Blurry or cropped documents invite queries. Scan at good quality.
Missing signatures or stamps. Authorisation letters need to be properly signed, and sometimes on company letterhead.
Treating it as a one-time job. Registration has to be maintained, and changes to your product or factory may need to be reported to BIS.
How to prepare without losing your mind
Start by confirming your product actually falls under the CRS list and finding its exact IS standard. Then book the lab test early, since that’s usually the slowest part. While the testing runs, collect the rest of your documents in one folder so nothing is hunted down at the last minute. Finally, read everything once as if you were the reviewer. If a detail looks odd to you, it will look odd to them.
If that sounds like more than you want to take on, that’s where UMSPCS comes in. We help manufacturers, importers and brand owners organise their BIS CRS documents, coordinate with labs, and file clean applications. A clean first submission saves far more time than fixing a rejected one.
Final thought
BIS CRS paperwork rewards people who are careful and consistent. Get the lab report right, keep your names and details matching everywhere, and don’t leave the small documents for last. Do that, and the process is far less painful than its reputation. If you want a second pair of eyes on your file, UMSPCS is happy to help.
FAQs
What does CRS mean in BIS?
It’s the Compulsory Registration Scheme, under which certain electronic and IT products must be registered with BIS before they can be sold in India.
Is a test report mandatory for BIS CRS registration?
Yes. The report must come from a BIS-recognized laboratory and be based on the applicable Indian Standard for your product.
Do foreign manufacturers need an Indian representative?
Yes. Overseas manufacturers must appoint an Authorised Indian Representative who handles communication and compliance with BIS.
How long does BIS CRS registration take?
It depends on the product, the lab’s schedule and how clean your application is. Testing is often the longest step, and queries from BIS can add more time. A complete, consistent file helps a lot.
Can I use the same registration for different models?
Sometimes. Similar models in a series can be covered under one registration if the differences are minor and BIS’s series rules are met. The details depend on the product category, so check this before you apply.
What happens if I sell without BIS registration?
Selling a notified product without registration can lead to penalties, seizure of goods and trouble clearing imports at customs.
Does the registration expire?
BIS registrations have a validity period and need renewal. Check the current validity terms for your category, and keep track of your renewal date.
Can UMSPCS help with my documentation?
Yes. UMSPCS can guide you through the document checklist, review your files before submission and support you through the application process.
