SCIENCE:
Rhys opened us up with a wonderful prayer. It started our day off just right. After taking a quick costume class pic (props on the super cool costumes), we read a devotional from Louie Giglio about earthquakes and that though the earth my shake & change, our God never does. Today was the last day for our fundraiser! We collected the envelopes and ASB came by with a chest of treasures for those who participated. All orders should be submitted online at this point. If you have any money that should have been turned in today, please make sure to drop those by on Thursday. The students highlighted the ring of fire our their world worksheet and then we labeled the largest earthquake ever recorded in the world (9.5 in Chile) and in America (9.2 in Alaska). We watched a short video on earthquakes and reviewed our reading. After discussing compression, tension, and shear forces, we became engineers! With a partner, the students constructed a building out of a paper plate, toothpicks, popsicle sticks, and stale marshmallows (they work way better than fresh ones). We tested our structures on the earthquake machine (read stacked books) against compression, tension and shear forces. Each tower that stood the test recieved an extra punch! We did not have time to practice earthquake safety before break, but this may be a good time to do so at home if you get the chance.

GEOGRAPHY:

Rhys led us in the flag salute and then chose a clue card that led us to Spain! Miah shared with the class about her trip to Mexico last week and even brought a few items for the students to see - includeing pesos! We spent a bit of time discussing what a missionary is and working through the details of our missionary book homework. You'll find this info linked on the homework below. The rest of this class we were working with our team on an exercise (pop quiz!) reviewing continents and oceans. Most of the students aced it! Our spirit rally was during Geography class today. The students had a lot of fun freeze dancing and cheering for the raffles :)

IEW:

We started our IEW time with our memory verse. They turned in their final drafts for "The Crow and the Peacocks." After a few students read their stories aloud, we collected them and were ready to begin our new story: "The Ants & the Grasshoppers." We worked together to create a KWO and then introduced the idea of a Sentence Opener. This week we will be working with only one sentence opener, the -ly word. Since the students were already familiar using -ly words within their sentences, most of them found this pretty easy. It was fun to see how choosing a different -ly work to start a sentence can drastically affect the meaning of the sentence. We spent the remaining time passing out Boo-Grams (I sent these home for your discerning pleasure - you're welcome) and dreaming up strong verbs & adjectives we can use in our story this week.
