Science

Hudson opened our day with prayer. We read a devotional about how God sees us through even the most tumultuous storms. Next, we watched a video reviewing and expanding on our knowledge of thunderstorms. Miss Chelsea led us in a fill-in-the-blank worksheet to ground our understanding of thunderstorms. Then we used a paper bag to demonstrate thunder. As each group thundered their paper bag, the rest of the class created the rainstorm with sound effects. Just as their hand compressed the air in the bag to create a sound wave of thunder to our ear so the heat of lightning compresses the surrounding air creating the sound wave of thunder during a storm. We reflected on the various reasons why we can tell that you will see lightning before you hear thunder. We completed our tornado worksheet and then I brought around a glass jar that, when swirled, reveals a vivid cyclone.

Geography

Evan led us in the flag salute and then we read a clue card that led us to Australia! We also found the Middle East and enjoyed a taste of hummus with pita chips. As the students completed their Asia landform watercolor I read a missionary story from Syria in the early 1900s (we added this time to their read-a-thon log). Most of the students were able to complete the water color including the Himalayas, Gobi Desert, Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Arctic Ocean, Red Sea, and Yangtze River. A few didn’t quite finish the labels so I told them I would add the image to the slideshow above.

After our new lion memory verse song we discussed the read-a-thon and passed out the forms filling in the first log with our reading today (feel free to initial for 8 mintues of reading). There is a packet of information attached that you’ll want to be sure to peruse. The students will be completing a group write over the next two weeks in class as they finish their final drafts for homework. To do the group write, I asked each student to create simple drawing while we passed back the Kite rough drafts and read a few of our Fishing rough drafts. When we had finished the readings, I collected the drawings and Miss Chelsea and I selected 4 to be used for the group writes. Each table team was given one image and next week will write a story describing what happened before the picture, during the picture and after the picture including dress-ups and decorations. We started taking notes for this today and will finish them next week. For the final 10 minutes of class we attended the Read-A-Thon rally that offered more information on the “how to” as well as a kick off for our Assure Pregnancy Resource Drive.
