Digital fabrication technologies such as 3D printing, laser cutting and computer numerical control (CNC) milling are usually the pictures in mind when people talk about makerspaces. Indeed, they are important tools due to their digital precision in manufacturing and prototyping. They play a key role for makers to test and output real products, during the design and making cycles.
In our Makerspace, we have some 3D printers and one laser cutter. They are suitable for classroom use but considering their noise level when in action and non-toxic fumes generated albeit little, they are placed in a smaller enclosed corner room with large ventilation fan on the ceiling and glass sliding doors that can see through and block the fabrication noise.
We currently have 2 Bambu Lab X1C, 4 Creality K1 Max as our main 3D printers and a resin printer Creality Halot One and a Wash/Cure machine (Creality UW-01).
Bambu Lab X1C is the new generation of fast printing and multi-colour printer.
Creality K1 Max is the new generation of fast printing FDM printer. It can move/print as fast as 600 mm/s, which is about 12 times faster then our retired Ender 3 series at 50 mm/s. It is auto calibration and firmware update, touch screen control make it easy to print. Even with fast printing, its printing quality is still of high standard. K1 Max is an enclosed printer with large printing volume. It is a great digital fabrication equipment for big or small makerspaces.
Halot One is a Stereolithography (SLA) 3D printer. It prints with resin (UV wavelength 405 nm) and UV light. Here is the offical site information about this printer. We also have a Creality Washing and Curing machine (UW-01) for curing printed resin models.
Below are some retired 3D printers. Except for the TEVO Little Monster, all retired printers are sent to Tinkerspace at KG-R224. These printers are well-utilised for public showcase, training workshops and student projects.
TEVO Little Monster is a Delta printer. Here is the official site information.
2. Creality CR10S-Pro
CR10S-Pro is a Cartesian printer. Here is the official site information.
3. Creality CR-X
CR-X is a dual extruder Cartesian printer, which can print 2 colours. Here is the official site information.
There are 2 Ender 3 Pro printers. Here is the offical site information about this printer.
There are 2 Ender 3 V2 printers. Here is the official site information about this printer.
We currently have one laser cutter - the Emblaser 2 with F2000 Fume Extractor from Darkly Labs. This laser cutter with the air filter is suitable for indoor classroom use. The use of laser cutter should always be attended and supervised.
The management and maintenance of these digital fabrication facilities are usually what stopped teachers wanting to apply them in teaching and learning. There is no easy solution for teachers, but apart from teachers should posses certain level of knowledge and skills about using these digital fabrication technologies, there are certainly some useful tips to make their uses and maintenance more friendly for teachers and students.
