Namaste
In the past two weeks we have welcomed new tamariki, whānau and kaiako to Lyall Bay School with a Mihi Whakatau. This is the first time that we have had some of our Lyall Bay tamariki saying the whaikorero. Tino pai to Kayden, and to Niko who was a great support.
We also had our whole school assembly led by Huetepapra. We have a whole school assembly twice a term. Each team has the opportunity to organise the assembly, sharing and celebrating across the school. At this assembly the student leaders shared about a Book Character dress up day, a talent quest, Onesie Day and support Friends fundraising on Election Day, that they are organising. We sang together, shared our current whānau roopu points, heard a movie review and watched the short movie, and awarded Principal Certificates. Congratulations to these tamariki for showing the school values and receiving a well deserved award : Emily B - whakapono, Ava - whakapono and manaaki, Avery - hiranga and pākiki, Audrey N - manaaki and hiranga, Lucia, Phoenix and Leila - whakapono, Nazareth - manaaki, Camden - manaaki, Thea M - manaaki, Jove - manaaki, Iszac - hiranga, Luca - pākiki, Jojo - whakapono. Tino pai.
Ka pai to Rohan and Jacob who were our comperes.
We are continuing with Electives this term. Tamariki have had a range of electives to choose from, Chess, Felt toy making, Creating a board game, Yoga, STEM, Languages (French and Spanish), Pacific Art, Ocean Clean up, Friendship bracelets, Arts and Crafts, Card making and Coding!
The newsletter is published every two weeks on Tuesdays. The newsletter is available on HERO and on our website. In each newsletter some kupu will be shared with you to help with all of our understanding, this week's kupu are all around getting ready in the morning ... hoiroi - wash, oho, whakaoho - to wake, awaken, hīrere- shower, parakuihi - breakfast, kuhu - to put on, whakapai- tidy, repair, bless.
Last week we held our W.A.T.P Hui (Waihangatia ngā Ākonga Tino Pai Building the Best Learners Hui) as an open day for you all to hear and see what maths is now like at school. We had whānau eating breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea with us in the hall, where there were a variety of Rich Maths Tasks, as well as whānau in classes taking part in workshops. Great to see the engagement from whānau and magnificent maths in hubs.
Please be aware of safety when dropping off and picking up your tamariki. It has been noted that there are some dropping off and picking up practices that are quite dangerous, with double parking, parking on yellow lines, not using the crossings, parking across driveways, etc. This is especially dangerous when the weather is bad as everyone finds it difficult to see in the rain, tamariki are not looking as they are running from the cold / wind / rain. Please look after everyone's safety and park legally to drop off and pick up.
The second week in Hepetema (September) is Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. You can sign up as part of our school community to access a range of resources and put us in line for a prize! Just click the link https://www.reomaori.co.nz/128484?recruiter_id=16398 and sign up. Te Wiki o te Reo Māori will be celebrated at our kura in many ways such as whole school kapa haka, te wa tuku te reo at 12 pm each day, coming together on Paraire for waiata.
Message from the Board
The Board of Trustees met on Monday 31 July. The board received an update on the community engagement element of the strategic plan. It noted the continued positive engagement with the school community, with the recent cultural assembly well attended, contributing to a positive feeling across school friends and whanau. Mid-year data was reviewed and it is great to see progress across the school. The board also discussed the significant effort of staff contributing to more frequent and fun community engagement and agreed to attend and provide morning tea for the staff. The Code of Conduct and Learning Support Policy was reviewed and agreed. The board noted in the Principal's report that there is a correlation between unexplained absences and tamariki learning - the board supports all initiatives to enable safe, equitable access to Lyall Bay School.

Upcoming Freyberg Street Changes:
Find out more about Freyberg Street changes coming up - drop-in information session, Tuesday 29 August, 2.30pm–5.30pm in the school library.
This is an opportunity to talk with the Council team and find out more about the neighbourhood trial planned for Freyberg Street later in the year, including where alternative drop-off zones may be.
The team has been meeting regularly with a working group consisting of residents, parents and representatives from the school and will be involving students soon so they can be part of the installation and creative finishing touches.
The street trial is about making it possible for more children to safely get part or all of the way to school under their own steam – something we would love to see happen. Having a safer, quieter, child-friendly area near the school entrance is key to this. The trial will also create a calmer environment for residents on the street and discourage people from speeding through the area.
The changes planned will involve some safety improvements at the intersection of Wha Street and Freyberg Street so it’s easier to cross, and a safe zone stretching from one side of Freyberg Street to the other at the school entrance. People will still be able to come in and out of the street, but won’t be able to drive through. The trial is expected to be installed in November and be in place over the summer and into term 1 next year.
School Photo Orders:
Orders close on Wednesday, 30 August. Orders will still be accepted at the office this year, but from next year, all orders will be online.

Acting Opportunity:
Liz Mullane and I have started the casting process for Nathalie Boltt and Emma Slade and their film “Holy Days” - script by Nathalie based on the novel of the same name by Dame Joy Cowley. This is a big role for a young Maori boy. Some details below…..
SYNOPSIS
It’s set in NZ in 1977 and is a charming story about a 7 year old boy and 3 elderly nuns who make a hasty road trip from the North Island to the South Island and back in an attempt to save their Convent from being demolished due to lack of resources. It is both funny and heart warming with the nuns’ relationships with each other and with the little boy at it’s core.
At this stage we are only looking for the role of Brian, the 7 year old boy.
Ethnicity - Maori / part Maori - Age: 7 (or small 8 / 9 year old)
Description: Brian is bright boy and deep thinker. Physically, he is quite delicate, and tends to be introverted, becoming easily exhausted by noise and too much ‘kid time’. At school he is is easily bored, because he grasps complex concepts and then goes on to daydream and shirk on his schoolwork. Despite possessing an adorable sense of humour, Brian is not a rough ’n tumble boy. He prefers listening to and attempting to join in with adult conversation (if only his vocabulary would keep up! ) which leads to his exclusion from games and feeling like a bit of an outsider and an easy target for bullies. He used to find solace in his mother, Paula, who understood him and made him feel like he had a place in the world, but when Paula dies, Brian is devastated and his life and behaviour quickly unravel. The changes at home only worsen his distress, as his father now has a new girlfriend, Liz, and his sisters seem to embrace her. Refusing to accept Liz as a replacement for his mum, Brian uses his vivid imagination to convince himself that there is a way to bring Paula back.
He increasingly seeks solace and companionship with the local nuns. Their tranquil environment contrasts with the chaos of his home. Moreover, the nuns' strong faith places them within the spiritual realm, which resonates with Brian's quest. Similar to Olive in the movie "Little Miss Sunshine," Brian sees no age difference between himself and his odd group of companions on the road trip. He values the nuns for accepting him as he is and providing him with the undivided attention he lacks elsewhere. Brian, in his innocence, sees the nuns, not as forgotten relics like the rest of his town saw them, but as interesting, playful, hilarious and at times even risk-taking trailblazers - just like him! Most importantly though, Brian believes that the nuns can drive him to the South Island to fulfil his mission of retrieving his mum from Aoraki and thus driving the imposter, Liz, from his home.
Filming will be largely in Wellington so given the logistics of age and hours that can be worked we will be very interested in people based closer to that area and also interested in twins. If someone is interested, please make contact with me and send a current photo of your child.
