Our student leaders have done a great job pulling together a fundraiser for a Esk Valley School in Napier. Everyone from Lyall Bay School has made a 'Caring Card', and with the donated stationery, games, toys and activities, as well as the fundraising money from our Wheels Day last Friday (an amazing amount of $670), our leaders have done a great job. Ka pai.
Thank you to everyone in our community for supporting kaiako so they could attend a Paid Union Meeting last week. This was so kaiako from all over New Zealand could discuss the current negotiations taking place for the next Collective Agreement and vote on if they agreed with what is being offered. The vote has come back as a "no" to accepting the current offer, and kaiako are now deciding whether to take strike action. We will keep you informed.
In the second to last week of term (28 - 29 March) we have Learning Conversations. These conversations are very important for the learning of all tamariki. Tamariki lead the conversation about their learning with support from kaiako. They will share what they have been learning in reading, writing, maths, as well as anything else they are working on, or are proud of. Kaiako will join for much of the conversation. They can answer any questions you have, help guide the conversation about learning, and support tamariki with their sharing. The time put aside for these conversations is 30 minutes. This time is flexible for you so it can fit around other commitments you may have. All tamariki are welcome, but we do remind the tamariki who aren't sharing to show Manaaki Respect to their sibling and others in the hub. You can book your Learning Conversations through this link https://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz/code/35xku (unless your child is in Ahu). Learning Conversations start at 3:15pm and the last one finishes at 6:45pm, Tuesday 28 March or Wednesday 29 March. Tamariki in Ahu have a slightly different format for their first Learning Conversation. These conversations are focussed on how well tamariki have settled at school as well as their learning. If your child is in Ahu you will receive a different booking schedule through HERO. These are on the same day and same times as the rest of the school. If you have any trouble with the booking please see kaiako or pop to the office.
You may have noticed that goals are no longer available on HERO. We found this to be quite cumbersome so instead, tamariki and kaikao will discuss goals with you at Learning Conversations. As the goals are achieved and changed they will be shared with you through the Celebration of Learning pages.
Tuesday 14th March at 10.30am is our first Mihi Whakatau since 2021. We have been cautious about bringing everyone together, but now is the time. All new tamariki from last year and this year will take part as Manuhiri, and a special invitation has gone out to their whānau If you would like to be part of our Mihi Whakatau you are most welcome to join us. We look forward to officially welcoming new whānau, tamariki and kaiako to Lyall Bay School.
We have been asked to be part of supporting the education of new kaiako. The Open Polytech run a Teacher Training course and are coming into film classes in action on Monday 13th March. These videos will only be used for teaching purposes at the Polytechnic and will not be shared on social media or anywhere else. There is no sound and no tamariki are interviewed or spoken to. It is just filming of a lesson and they will put a voiceover with it. Our enrolment form does cover taking photos, filming, etc, but please let us know if you do not give permission for your child to be 'in shot', email kathy@lyallbay.school.nz
We continue to have some cases of COVID at school. Please keep an eye out for symptoms and test if you think there could a possibility of COVD being present. If someone is COVID positive, just that person from the household needs to isolate for seven days. The rest of the household can continue as normal, but do need to test regularly. If a child tests positive for COVID and was present at school when they could have been infectious, a notice will go out to the affected hub on HERO.
The newsletter is published every two weeks on Tuesdays from now on. It will be available on HERO and on our website. In each newsletter I will be sharing some kupu with you to help with all of our understanding... kati: to shut; e hia kē mai nei: what a lot of; maumahara: remember; whakatika: correct, fix up; titiro: look.
We’re a Movin’ March school and will be stamping passports at the gate as part of the Walk or Wheel Passport Challenge all through March. Walking or wheeling to school is a great way to get active, know your neighbourhood, kick start learning for the day AND take care of the environment. Remember students don’t have to complete their passports to go in the draw to win a $400 MYRIDE voucher at the end of March! Fancy going in the draw to win a scooter? Parents who take part in the Whānau photo competition on Facebook or Instagram will be in to win 1 of 5 adult or child Micro Scooters or a Family Pass to Staglands or Zealandia. Check out the Movin’ March website for more on these competitions and how you can take part.

Proposed Road Changes:
Safer speeds in Lyall Parade, Tacy and Kemp Streets, lots of new crossings, and some safer biking and scooting connections are among the proposals to make our neighbourhood easier to get around in low carbon ways.
From Monday 6 March, you can find out more about the changes planned for Kilbirnie, Rongotai and Lyall Bay and provide feedback at transportprojects.org.nz/kilbirnie by 27 March.
For streets on the city’s bike network, changes include safer lanes for people on bikes and scooters on Onepu Road, Coutts Street (Te Whiti Street to the airport underpass), and Tirangi Road (Leonie Gill pathway to Coutts Street).
There are some changes proposed at the entrances to Cruickshank Street, Salek Street and Te Whiti Street too.
Following community suggestions, the Council is also wanting to know what people think of the idea of running some short trials to see how parts of Freyberg, Yule or Ross Streets could work as low traffic neighbourhoods.
Register for a webinar on Tuesday 14 March, 7.30pm using this link or via the website to find out more.
The project team will talk about the proposals and answer questions. There’s also several drop-in sessions planned (see the website for details).

The Maranui Swimming Club provides swimming tuition and coaching in a fun and non-competitive environment for children aged 5 to 14. Maranui Swimming Club is looking for new members. Their Club Night is every Friday (excluding school holidays) from 7pm to 8pm at the Aquadome, which is located at the rear of Wellington East Girls' College.
The Club operates in the middle ground between school swimming and commercial learn to swim classes. There is a family atmosphere and a low-cost approach ($85 per year, free parking, no weekly entry fees) supported by the great contribution of committed volunteer coaches.
For more detailed information, please refer to website www.maranuiswimming.co.nz. Alternatively, email maranuiswim@gmail.com or come along for a free trial on a Friday night (new members / trialists will need to complete a safety/application form before being able to swim).
Eczema Study - Children Wanted:
We are running a children’s eczema clinical trial at two local pharmacies in Wellington, Alexander Pharmacy ( 191 Willis Street, Te Aro, Wellington 6011) and Castles Chemist (139 Riddiford Street, Newtown, Wellington 6021) as well as other community pharmacies around the country. This new study is looking for volunteers aged 2-12 with a doctor’s diagnosis of eczema to test a novel mānuka oil-based topical treatment.
For those who choose to participate in the study, volunteers and their parent/guardian travel to the participating pharmacy for two study visits, 6 weeks apart. They will be provided with study treatment to apply twice daily for 6 weeks and will answer a weekly questionnaire about their eczema symptoms. All study medication is provided free of charge and volunteers will be compensated for their time and travel expenses whilst in the study. This study is approved by the New Zealand Health and Disability Ethics Committee.
If you would like to take part, you can contact Kathy at the school office to be sent the parent/guardian information sheet which contains more detailed information about the study.
The only fee for the juniors is the annual membership fee ($85) and then all coaching is free. Additionally any kids wanting to try it out first are welcome to come for two free sessions. We can also provide equipment for those who need it.
Wellington Symphonic Band:
Wellington Symphonic Band is thrilled to invite students and beginner players to our Youth Band. This ensemble is intended to help young players experience playing as part of a large wind group for the first time and help them to develop musically in a fun, social environment. We're primarily aiming for students of Year 6-10, but everyone who would benefit from the experience is welcome!
Rehearsals will be held during term time from 5-6pm on Wednesdays in the Wellington College Library, beginning on March 1. Our Musical Director is David Codd, who comes to us with tertiary degrees in Classical Piano and French horn as well as a wealth of conducting experience, jokes and icebreakers.
First rehearsal is FREE and the band is very low cost. It is not-for-profit and we are running it to help the community. Please email wellingtonsymphonicbands@gmail.com to find out more and to let us know you are coming. If you can’t make the first week, you can still join at any time.
Miramar Night Market:
