Kia ora whānau
What a wild week of weather it has been. I hope that you have all kept safe. With this wind it means that we get a lot of clothing blowing around that has been left on the playground during breaks. Please make sure all clothing is named so it can be returned easily to you. If it is not named it will be put in lost property and you are welcome to come in anytime and have a look through. At the end of term lost property is collected up, checked for names again, and then anything unnamed is taken to charity. Thank you Di for doing this job for us each term.
Next term, being term 4 is the term for sunhats. Please make sure these are named clearly. We do encourage sunscreen to be applied before coming to school and we have sunscreen at school too. You are welcome to supply your own and keep it in school bags.
Onesie Day was a great success. What great mahi from our tamariki leaders for organising this and the bake sale that, together, raised almost $550.
Whakamihi (congratulations) to all our ArtSplash performers. You all did an amazing job with your singing in a massed choir and our own dance! You should all be very proud of your efforts and we look forward to seeing you all on stage in the future.
We celebrated our Road Patrollers, who do such a great job at keeping all our tamariki safe when crossing the road in the morning and afternoon. They took part in a parade to Parliament with road patrollers from around Wellington, battled wind and rain and returned to hot milo and pizza supplied by WCC.
Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori was celebrated last week. Our highlight was gathering as a school on the turf and performing waiata. There were many other celebrations in hubs and teams that will have been shared with you on HERO.
Onepū held a Film Festival yesterday. Oh my goodness, we have some budding film makers in our midst. Tino pai to all involved, from watching and critically analysing short films to making your own, it has been a huge learning experience.
Learning Conversations are in this week of school on today and tomorrow. These conversations are focussed on the learning that tamariki have been part of. They are for all tamariki who have been at school since the middle of term 2. Ahu whānau, your kaiako will contact you to let you know if you need to book these or not. If there is something specific that you to speak to kaiako about, please email them prior to the time, so they can connect with you about it. Please book through https://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz/code/nrm3p or use the QR code on the poster.
Please check HERO for Timely Comments about the learning of your tamariki. This will give you an idea of what has been learnt and what you can ask about at the conversations.
The book fair is open in the library each of these days, so please come and have a look at what is on offer.
The newsletter is published every two weeks on Tuesdays. The newsletter is available on HERO and on our website. In each newsletter some kupu will be shared with you to help with all of our understanding. This week's kupu are all around kura ... ra- day, tauira- student, mōhio- know, tika- to be right, correct, in order, whakarongo- listen, pānui- to read, a notice, ako - to learn, pātai- to ask a question, question.
THE ULTIMATE PARENT’S GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING THE ONLINE WORLD OF OUR KIDS
Understanding our kids' online world and how to keep them safe is really important in an ever-changing online environment. Come and hear Filmmaker and Author, Rob Cope, in what promises to be a hilarious, straight-talking parent-to-parent talk. Along with Miramar North School and Roseneath School we have arranged to have KidsOnLine come and speak with you all, and we have only 50 whānau who have indicated they will be coming along to learn how to best protect tamariki when online. Schools around the country have heard Rob speak and the feedback has been 'Every parent needs to hear this', make sure you don't miss out. This event will be held in the Lyall Bay School hall on October 17th from 6.30 - 8.30 pm. As we are joining with two other schools (to help with costs) there will be limited numbers, so it will be on a first-in-first-served basis. Please click on the Simple Survey with this pānui HERO to let us know you will be attending.
Athletics sports is in the first week of term 4. We will be travelling by bus to get to Newtown Park. Please make sure tamariki wear suitable clothes and footwear, have a substantial morning tea and lunch, a bottle of water, a hat, and sunscreen. Tamariki in Maranui and Onepū are there the whole day, competing in all events on a rotation basis. Huetepara are at Newtown Park until lunch, competing in a range of events also on a rotation basis.
If you would like to lend us a hand please see kaiako or Melanie, we really appreciate your help.
Lyall Bay School Out of Zone Ballot
The board invites applications from ‘out of zone’ parents who wish to enrol their child/children at Lyall Bay School.
Enrolment at the school is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available from the school office.
Please phone or visit the school office or website for details of enrolment applications. The enrolment form can be downloaded from the website, or send an email to principal@lyallbay.school.nz.
The deadline for receipt of applications for out-of-zone places is Friday 20th October 2023 at 5 pm.
The board has determined that 20 places are likely to be available for out-of-zone students next year. The exact number of places will depend on the number of applications received from students who live within the school's home zone.
Applications from out-of-zone students will be processed in the following order of priority:
First priority must be given to any applicant who is accepted for enrolment in a special programme run by the school:
Second priority must be given to any applicant who is the sibling of a current student of the school:
Third priority must be given to any student who is the sibling of a former student of the school:
Fourth priority must be given to any applicant who is a child of a former student of the school:
Fifth priority must be given to any applicant who is either a child of an employee of the board of the school or a child of a member of the board of the school:
Sixth priority must be given to all other applicants
If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. If a ballot is required, it will be held on Tuesday 24th October 2023. Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within three school days of the ballot being held.
If you know of anyone who is keen to join our amazing school, please let them know that the ballot is now open.
We wish you all a safe and relaxing break from school and look forward to seeing you back on 9th October.
