Tēnā koutou e whānau
What a huge start to the term we have had. Cross Country at the beach on a perfect day, W.A.T.P Hui Art Show that was amazing, Support Staff Day, Pink Shirt Day, and Phoenix Support Day, just to name the big events. A huge mihi to all of you for your support of these events. The number of whānau at Cross Country was fabulous and appreciated by all tamariki. We couldn't believe the number of whānau and friends who came to the W.A.T.P hui and Art show. We estimated it would have been over 500, what a turnout. You should be so proud of the art from your tamariki, together all the art was fabulous. There are a few photos below celebrating these events.
Congratulations to the runners who have been selected to represent Lyall Bay School at Eastern Zone Cross Country on Wednesday.
Yr 4: Barnaby, Rupert, Baraa, Xavier, Willem, Franklin, Leila, Milly, Nia, Florence, Courtney and Bailey
Yr 5: James, Camden, Paddy, Nabeel, Trystan, Harry, Poppy W, Scout, Lily, Isla, Tallula and Phoebe
Yr 6: Toby O, Kayden, Murad, Luke, Mujtaba, Sam, Ruairi, Shane, Floyd, Elsa, Harper, Sofia, Nina R, Nina S, Jeanie
We know that you will represent yourselves, your whānau and your school admirably, demonstrating our values of Hiranga, Whakapono, Manaaki and Pākiki.
Nina, Toby, Jojo and Ruairi gathered feedback from some attendees at the W.A.T.P. Hui Art Show, but if you have any feedback for us about any of these events we would love to hear it.
Your tamariki may have mentioned that our break times are a little different. We have looked at how learning is best supported and changing the breaks so that tamariki eat after playing, rather than before, has been shown to have more settled learning times. The actual times are the same as before. We are trialling this. Yesterday staff gave feedback and next week we will gather feedback from tamariki too. We will then analyse this and make any changes if necessary.
The newsletter is published every two weeks on Tuesdays. The newsletter is available on HERO and on our website. In each newsletter, some kupu will be shared with you to help us all to develop our te reo Māori. This week's kupu are based around cooking... tunu- cook, bake, roast or grill, hū- to boil, tapatapahi- to chop or dice, kai- eat/food, reka- sweet, tasty, juicy, yummy.
In the last newsletter I mentioned the lost property that would be donated to charity at the end of term. We donated over 70 unnamed sweatshirts as well as jackets, and some other items. Please name clothing so we can return it to you.
The W.A.T.P hui Art Show was the start to our learning about Matariki. We have lots planned for this learning throughout the term. We continue with our Matariki Electives and Whānau Cultural Assembly and have added in a Beach Sighting prior to a breakfast. We look forward to seeing you there.
Thank you to the whānau who have volunteered to help with Breakfast Club or made donations. Many tamariki enjoy a warm and nourishing breakfast in the morning (or a second breakfast if they have already eaten at home!) Everyone is welcome. We do ask that tamariki come along before 8.55am, so they have time to eat before going to their hub.
HERO holds all our information for you about your child. It has Timely Comments (reports), Celebrations of Learning, notices, newsletters and medical posts if your child has needed to be looked after for an injury. Please make sure you have set notifications to how you want them to come in, so you don't miss anything important. If you are unsure let us know and we can give you a hand.
Timely Comments (Reports) are written when it is best for your tamaiti. You will get Timely Comments on Reading, Writing (or Literacy), Maths and Ako twice a year. You can make comments on the posts too, tamariki love to read these (as do kaiako!)
There has been a tummy bug on the rise at school. It can be anything from diarrhoea, vomiting, chills, and a bad headache. If your tamiti is showing any of these symptoms please keep them home and let us know at school through HERO or the absence line (04 939-9112).

Board of Trustees Update:
On Monday the 13th of May we had our third board meeting for 2024. This was held in the Staffroom at 7pm.
Our meeting always opens with a whakatauki, mihi or pepeha from one of our board members. Julia Blackburn shared a whakatauki to open our meeting. After the usual administration functions were completed we co-opted Michelle Duff to the board. We would like to welcome Michelle and the extra dimensions that she brings to the board.
As per our usual agenda, we reviewed our Policy reviews scheduled for this meeting. The Policy for this meeting was Employer Responsibility. This Policy, and all our school Policies, are on the School Docs website and available at any time through www.schooldocs.co.nz If you wish to read them or provide feedback on the Policy being reviewed, simply go to this website and type in Lyall Bay School. When prompted, the username for the community is lyallbay and the password is maranui.
Following the Policy discussion, the Board commented on the information Melanie had shared about the uLead Conference that she attended in Banff, Canada, during the break. Melanie attended this International Conference with 189 other New Zealand Principals and Principals from all over the world. There was much to learn with Trauma, Wellbeing, and 'Messy Leadership' workshops being standouts, but also connecting with Principals from different backgrounds and school types.
A letter was received form the community about the Freyberg St Low Traffic trial, this was discussed and a response has been sent.
The Board worked through ERO's Self Improvement Framework (Stewardship and Governance). At each meeting the board will delve more deeply into each aspect of this.
The Principal’s Report was shared with the Board. This includes a breakdown of student achievement in core curriculum areas. We discussed the extra support being offered to students in reading, writing and maths. Each report includes a Health and Safety section that breaks down any injuries that have occurred since the last board meeting. Most of these injuries are grazes, bumps and bruises.
The board meeting finished with a mihi from Karl Emson.
Our next meeting is on Monday the 17th of June at 7pm. Members of the school community are welcome to attend these public meetings.

Wellington Hockey is currently in search of coaches to support our U13 and U15 development programmes. These programmes start on 21st of July and run each Sunday until the 22nd of September. There are programmes running at NHS, Fraser, and Kapiti. You will also have the opportunity to attend one of the Lower North Island Festivals or tournaments, however, you do not need to be available to attend the Festivals or Tournaments to be a coach in this programme.
Whether you're an experienced coach looking for a new challenge or someone eager to begin their coaching journey, we welcome individuals who are passionate about nurturing young talent and shaping the future of hockey in our region. By joining our team, coaches will be supported by a “Coach Developer” and the WHA Development team.
If you're interested in making a meaningful impact and helping young players reach their full potential, we encourage you to get involved. If you know of someone who would be suitable for this opportunity, let us know!
