Tālofa lava
You will have seen our message that went out to you on Sunday around NZEI kaiako (teachers) attending a Paid Union Meeting on Wednesday (tomorrow) from 1 - 3 pm. The Secretary of Education has waived the notice period so the negotiations can proceed, we do apologise for the short notice. As many of our kaiako are members of the NZEI they will not be available to be in class, so we are asking if you could pick your tamariki up at 12:30 if possible. This will mean there will be some kaiako that can supervise the tamariki that can't be picked up in much smaller groups. Please fill in the survey on HERO to let us know if you can pick up your tamariki or not. Thank you to those who have already let us know.

Tino pai to our amazing Cross Country representatives. They went to Eastern Zones on a very cold day, but at least it wasn't raining! They all competed spectacularly with some outstanding results:
Camden and James came first and second in Yr 4 boys.
Poppy and Scout came eighth and ninth with Tallulah coming in 15th in Yr 4 girls.
Silas came fifth and Luke 14th in Yr 5 boys.
Leonard was 12th in the Yr 6 boys.
Thank you so much to the whānau that helped out, it was really appreciated.
Last week we had visitors from Furnham University South Carolina. They spent all afternoon in classes and were very interested in how we teach in New Zealand. They were impressed with our tamariki and the way they all collaborated, the learner agency they were able to bring to their learning, how they knew their goals and what they need to work on. They could see that we know our learners well and make sure that we cater for all their different needs.
We are required to regularly consult with the community about our Health and Physical Education programme. Please complete the survey through this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HealthPE. It will take about 5 minutes to go through and answer the following nine questions and multi-choice answers. Your involvement in providing us with your feedback and views will help us in making informed decisions on a very important element of educating all of our tamariki. We have had a few already complete the survey, but it would be helpful if we had more to give us a strong direction. The survey will close this Friday.

We are thrilled to announce that Te Ahi Ora will be coming to Lyall Bay School. There will be free performing arts lessons, followed by free evening fire performances and lessons for our community.
Fire Performance is a new community activity that is rapidly spreading across the country. This exciting discipline engages the mind, activates the body, and is incredibly fun and stimulating.
The last few years have been rather difficult for schools, students, and families, and they aim to re-ignite the passion for learning and community in a fun and highly engaging setting.
Te Ahi Ora has 5 goals:
Encourage students to participate in physically challenging and satisfying activities
Boost self-confidence, encourage experimentation and foster creativity
Provide opportunities for personal growth and development
Build a sense of community through shared celebration and performance
Counter the negative effects of excessive screen time and digital addiction
They will be working with Lyall Bay School from June 14th-16th, teaching non-fire lessons to students during the school day. On all 3 nights, they will be performing and teaching with fire on the school field from 5-7pm, working with students taught on the respective day.
This is a crucial component of the program during which students put into practice the skills they have acquired throughout the day, using real fire.
Although Fire Performance may sound dangerous at first, with the right safety procedures and protocols in place, it is just as safe as any contemporary sport (in some cases even safer). Thanks to these stringent health and safety systems, they are proud to maintain a fantastic safety record.
We require parents to ensure a few things to contribute to the safety of the evening:
1. Please do not wear clothing made from synthetic fabrics. No onesies, tutus, wigs, skirts, etc. Cotton and denim are fantastic. If you or your child are dressed in dangerous clothing, you will not be allowed to perform with fire. Clothing may accumulate small amounts of black soot, so don't wear brand new or expensive clothing.
2. If your child has long/fluffy hair, please bring a hair tie or hat.
3. We recommend bringing foldout camping chairs, water bottles, and blankets.
4. You are welcome to take photos and videos. If you post them on Instagram, Facebook, or Tiktok, please follow and tag @te.ahi.ora
After the sessions they will send out a Participant Survey through the school, to be filled out by parents and students. Participants that complete the survey will go into the draw to win $150 at the end of the term.
At the end of the survey there will be an option to upload pictures or videos. The best piece of media uploaded each term will win $150. We are often far too busy to get good videos or photos, so very much appreciate your assistance in this aspect!
This term we started electives. Tamariki had a range of electives to choose from. Thank you to whānau who have been helping out at some of these. Here are some photos of ukelele, biking pump track, drama, Spanish and recorder. Other electives this term are felt soft toy making, papier mache, box craft, minecraft for education, sport exposure, dioramas, garden craft, wellbeing, suncatchers, card games and comic book making. Electives take place on Tuesday afternoons, if you would like to help out please contact your child's kaiako. Our next round of electives will be based around Matariki and will be over a week.
Welcome
to Georgia Williams, Ben Nguyen, Sahana Prakash, Hamza and Jana Shehab Eddin and Theo Randall who started in the past 2 weeks.
We know your time at Lyall Bay School will be the Best!

Have You Thought About Hosting An International Student?
Open up the world for your family and be a part of enriching and transforming lives.
Now that global travel has opened up we are receiving many applications from students wishing to start at Wellington High School in 2023. These students will come for one term through to a year.
We are now looking for new homestay families who are inclusive, caring, supportive and willing to share their home and Kiwi life with a student. Visiting students want to experience day to day life with a New Zealand family and to feel a part of the family.
The 2023 homestay fee will be $320 per week.
After hosting more than 50 students a homestay Mum summarised saying
"Hosting students opened up the world for our family. I can't think of the word to really describe how enriching the whole experience is."

Have You Completed the 2023 Census?
We are supporting Stats NZ to encourage everyone to complete the 2023 Census.
So, this is a reminder that you need to return your census forms if you have not done so already.
Census data is used to make important decisions that affect us all. The census is the official count of people living in Aotearoa New Zealand, and
everyone who was in the country on Census Day, 7 March 2023, is required by law to complete a census form.
Your participation will help ensure that our community receives funding for services for the number of people that live in our community. That includes
education, health, and social services.
To complete the census, you can do it online at www.census.govt.nz using one of the access codes provided in the letters sent to your household. Or you can fill out paper census forms if you have them. To request a new access code or paper forms, freephone 0800 236 787 (0800 CENSUS) or order online at www.census.govt.nz.
The 2023 Census closes on 30 June, so you should do them online now or as soon as practicable. Ensure your paper forms are posted so they arrive with
Stats NZ by 30 June.
Census collectors are no longer visiting households providing help to complete census forms (except in the cyclone-impacted areas of the Far North, Te Tairāwhiti, and Hawke’s Bay). If you need assistance or more information:
·
You can attend a census support event and get face-to-face help to complete forms (for more information go to www.census.govt.nz/census-support).
·
We encourage you to help whānau, friends, and neighbours complete their forms.
·
There is information in New Zealand Sign Language, Braille, Easy Read, Large Print, and Audio formats, as well as in 29 different languages at www.census.govt.nz.
The 0800 CENSUS (0800 236 787) helpline will be open until 30 June.
Thank you for your support in making sure our community is accurately represented in the census.
