The last couple of weeks have been very up and down with sickness, both staff and tamariki! In most cases, when kaiako have been unwell, we have been able to get relievers or move people around. On the odd occasion we have had to split classes. Please be aware we are doing our very best to make sure every day is a learning day. If your tamariki are away from school for any reason please let the office know, either through HERO, on the answer machine (049399112), or an email to kathy@lyallbay.school.nz. Kaiako are often busy and don't read emails that come in after 8 am until the end of the day, or are away themselves, so it is not marked on the roll. The office will send you a text message if we haven't heard from you - this is for the safety of your tamariki.
Congratulations to all the Cross Country runners who were selected to represent Lyall Bay School at Eastern Zone Cross Country. We had some great results, with six of our tamariki qualifying for Interzones (those who came in the top ten). Kia pai e mahi.
Yr 4: Leila 3rd, Barnaby 5th, Rupert 9th, Baraa 13th
Yr 5: James 3rd, Camden 7th, Nabeel 10th, Scout 11th
Yr 6: Mujtaba 14th, Toby O 15th
Last week was Samoan Language week and we were treated to some Chop Suey and chocolate rice from the Tugaga whānau, thank you. We sang some Samoan songs, learned about Samoan culture through art, and practised some Samoan language. We hope to continue learning more. If you have something to share from your home we would love to hear from you. Later in the term we have our Cultural Assembly where we share different aspects of all of our cultures. Let kaiako know if you would like to share.
Next week we start our Matariki electives. Tamariki have been given the opportunity to choose which elective they would like to be part of. There is a wide range to select from, so korero at home and hear what your tamaiti has chosen. If you want to come and help out we would love to see you on Tuesday afternoons.
Yesterday was Teachers Only Day, so that is the reason the newsletter is on a Wednesday. Thank you for your support of this day and keeping tamariki home. I hope you all had a wonderful long weekend. We met for breakfast and Vishal came and spoke with us about 'Well Homes' and all the support that can be accessed by whānau. As a staff we explored more of our Professional Development around 'Teaching for Positive Behaviour'. We looked at some different ways to engage tamariki in shared learning, teaching social behaviours, using cooperative learning approaches, and supporting each other through tuakana - teina practices. Kaimahi then did some mahi on working with tamariki with differing needs and how they can be the best support, while the kaiako went through our school curriculum and measured where we are at, as well as our Inclusive and wellbeing practices.
Part of our wellbeing practices is changing the breaks so tamariki eat after playing. Kaiako have found that tamariki are more settled coming in for learning after eating, rather than rushing in after playing. We will continue trialling this practice until the end of term when we will gather more information from tamariki and staff about the impact it is having.
The newsletter is published every two weeks on Tuesdays (or Wednesday if it falls on a long weekend). The newsletter is available on HERO and on our website. In each newsletter, some kupu will be shared with you to help us all to develop our te reo Māori. Here are this week's kupu ... mihi- greet, acknowledge, thank, pay tribute, hunga- group of people, hapū - sub tribe, noho- to stay, sit, live, awa- river, maunga- mountain.
Today was EZ football for Yr 5-6 tamariki. We had many tamariki wanting to go so had to draw names from a hat as we were only allowed three teams. They did so well, showed all our school values of Pākiki, Hiranga, Whakapono and Manaaki, and had a great day. A huge mihi to all the whānau who were able to support with transport, coaching, managing and cheerleading.
Kia pai te wiki

A research team from Auckland University of Technology, working under clinical psychologist, Dr Amy Kercher, is investigating treatments for children with anxiety and/or ADHD in Aotearoa New Zealand.
We are currently inviting parents to share their child's experiences with support services for anxiety or ADHD. We have developed an anonymous online survey that should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Our research aims to provide insight into current practice, and we hope to develop effective and accessible services for children and their whānau in the future.
As the stars of the Matariki cluster rise in the winter sky, they signal a time of remembrance, reflection, and renewal across Aotearoa. Matariki is a special period that connects us to the land, the sky, and each other, through a series of events, traditions, and celebrations that are deeply rooted in Māori culture.
Ngā Manu is celebrating this special time of year with a number of offerings for the whole whānau.
We are introducing a brand new Star Hunt Nature Trail, combined with a Seed Bomb Workshop which enables tamariki to make their own seed bomb to take home.
We will also have a sausage sizzle and hot drinks on offer, along with guided bush walks at 12:15pm. Not to mention our ever-popular Eel Feeding at 12pm and 2pm. These will be running across the whole weekend (28-30 June).
On Friday we will also have Daizy Design face painting from 12-2pm and your chance to meet a life size Moa, courtesy of Stringbean Puppets.

Wellington Hockey is currently in search of coaches to support our U13 and U15 development programmes. These programmes start on 21st of July and run each Sunday until the 22nd of September. There are programmes running at NHS, Fraser, and Kapiti. You will also have the opportunity to attend one of the Lower North Island Festivals or tournaments, however, you do not need to be available to attend the Festivals or Tournaments to be a coach in this programme.
Whether you're an experienced coach looking for a new challenge or someone eager to begin their coaching journey, we welcome individuals who are passionate about nurturing young talent and shaping the future of hockey in our region. By joining our team, coaches will be supported by a “Coach Developer” and the WHA Development team.
If you're interested in making a meaningful impact and helping young players reach their full potential, we encourage you to get involved. If you know of someone who would be suitable for this opportunity, let us know!
