Kia orana
Our thoughts are with whānau and friends who are battling the outcome of recent weather conditions. We have donated some books to a school in Tinui who lost all their books through flooding, and the student leadership group are looking at how we can support more.
Our W.A.T.P hui last week shared information with whānau about structures for learning across the school. We had lots of great questions and feedback during these sessions. One parent shared how well their child was doing with the skills that Lyall Bay School encouraged in them, especially team work (collaboration) at EBIS and the kaiako said that tamariki from Lyall Bay School stand out with these skills. If you wish to pop in and connect with kaiako (teachers) then you are most welcome every day from 8.30 to just after 9.00am. Kaiako have this time in the hubs to connect with tamariki and whānau. If you want to speak alone with kaiako about something more in-depth, please make an appointment so they can make sure they have the time put aside just for you.
Thank you for filling in our Teaching for Positive Behaviour survey in the first couple of weeks. We put together the thoughts from yourselves, our tamariki and staff to guide us toward writing our Behaviour Expectations. These Behaviour Expectations are linked with our school values. Our school values are what we believe 'Builds the Best Learner Waihangatia ngā Ākonga Tino Pai’. They guide the way we all think, behave and act, and develop a strong sense of self, others, and the world. Our first draft is shared with you below.

Last week Onepū were treated to a visit from former MP and Government Minister, Hon. Kris Faafoi. Kris spoke about leadership with Onepū as they work on their own journey now they are the student leaders. Kris gave them some tips about listening to their parents, trying new things and being brave, as well as the importance of giving back to your community.
We continue to have some cases of COVID at school. Please keep an eye out for symptoms and test if you think there could a possibility of COVD being present. If someone is COVID positive, just that person from the household needs to isolate for seven days. The rest of the household can continue as normal, but do need to test regularly. If a child tests positive for COVID and was present at school when they could have been infectious, a notice will go out to the affected hub on HERO.
The newsletter will be coming out every two weeks on Tuesdays from now on. It will be available on HERO and on our website. In each newsletter I will be sharing some kupu with you to help with all of our understanding... horoi: to wash; kaiwhakatangitangi: musician; kaitiaki: caregiver; pirihimana: police officer.
We’re a Movin’ March school and are counting down to Wednesday the 1st March when we’ll start stamping passports at the gate as part of the Walk or Wheel Passport Challenge all through March. Walking or wheeling to school is a great way to get active, know your neighbourhood, kick start learning for the day AND take care of the environment. Remember students don’t have to complete their passports to go in the draw to win a $400 MYRIDE voucher at the end of March! Fancy going in the draw to win a scooter? Parents who take part in the Whānau photo competition on Facebook or Instagram will be in to win 1 of 5 adult or child Micro Scooters or a Family Pass to Staglands or Zealandia. Check out the Movin’ March website for more on these competitions and how you can take part.
There is a Paid Union Meeting for kaiako (teachers) planned by the union for 1st March at 2pm. Most of our kaiako will be attending this which means we will only have a small number of kaiako left at school. We will be open for supervision, but will be asking, if possible, that you pick your tamariki up at 1.30pm on 1st March. We will send out a survey on HERO to see how many will be here and arrange suitable supervision for them. Thank you for your support.

Friends of Lyall Bay School and the Lyall Bay Dads Club are excited to bring to our school community Summer in the Bay, the evolution of Good in the Hood. A huge thanks to those in the past who have put on this event - we want to honor this tradition as it rocks.
It's been a long time since we have been able to gather together as a school community and we are SO looking forward to a fun, whanau friendly event. We will have music, activities, sports, relays, good old tug of war, and hopefully something that involves water.
WHEN & WHERE IS IT?
Sunday, March 12. 1-5pm at Evans Bay Intermediate School - 5A Kemp street.
WHAT TO BRING
Bring a picnic for your whanau + something to sit on, wheels of your choice as there is a great pump track. Togs and towel for water play (water restrictions dependant).
BRING WATER BOTTLES!
We are aiming for a low waste event. Please bring your own water bottles. We will have water on site to refill your bottles. There will also be rubbish bins provided.
HATS & SUNBLOCK:
The weather is changeable, so don’t forget to slip, slop & slap! But don't panic if you forget the sunblock, we will have some at the MCs tent.
HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT THIS EVENT?
By coming and showing the love for our school and community.
