What a big start to Term 3. You will have seen in the newsletter in week 2 the many activities that we will be taking part in this term, being our Performing Arts term. Already Onepū have attended a Film Festival and are analysing films, our Kapa Haka Performance group and Onepū have been performing in Kilbirnie for FIFA Women's World Cup, a small group of singers have been part of a larger group at the Wellington opening of FIFA, and many of our tamariki performed at our Culural Assembly. It was wonderful to see so many whānau here supporting them. We are looking forward to many other opportunities throughout the term.
I attended a workshop last week run by John Parsons. John works with schools across New Zealand and Australia, supporting them with issues due to social media, etc, with our tamariki and rangatahi. One thing he did reiterate was that many of our young people are being exposed to conversations and ideas that are way outside of their comprehension and are adult themes, through gaming and social media. Of course, young people do not know how to respond or react to this as they do not have the understanding or world knowledge to cope. Instead, it comes out as inappropriate behaviour. Please make sure your tamariki do not have access to content that is not suitable for them. Instagram, for example, is meant to be for 13 years or older, Fortnite is also only fully open for 13 years and older - anyone younger gets a cabined account. Have you checked your child's account? Are your tamariki spending time on a range of activities, not just gaming? Are they exercising, eating healthily, getting enough sleep? Please be aware of what your tamariki are accessing online.
Protective factors for parents (from John Parsons):
>> For younger children, turn off all ICT at 7.30 pm.
>> Don't give them social media until they are old enough to be in it.
>> Maintain access to the child's platforms by creating the passwords for them.
>> Nominate trusted family members to join your children online and form a protective circle around them.
>> Create open lines of communication with your children.
All of our school policies are stored on School Docs, a portal that many schools use. To gain access to any policy go to www.schooldocs.co.nz then click Search for your school. Start typing the school’s name and then select it from the dropdown list. Enter the community username and password: lyallbay / maranui
The newsletter is published every two weeks on Tuesdays. Last term we put out a survey asking how often you would prefer to have the newsletter and the majority opted for every two weeks. The newsletter is available on HERO and on our website. In each newsletter some kupu will be shared with you to help with all of our understanding. As we have our Mihi whakatau coming up next week, I thought some kupu around that might be helpful ... manuhiri - visitors, hongi - the pressing of noses signifying unity in the mingling of one another's breath), whāikorero - to make a speech, waiata - to sing, tangata whenua - people of the land, hariru - shaking of hands, hui - to gather or assemble.
This week we have our W.A.T.P. Hui (Waihangatia ngā Ākonga Tino Pai Building the Best Learners Hui). This term we have linked the hui with Maths week. Wednesday is an open day for you to see maths in action. You can go to hubs from 8.30am - 10am, 11.30am to 12.30pm, and 2pm - 3pm, where you will be able to take part in maths the tamariki are working on. We will be serving breakfast in the hall from 8.30am - 9am, lunch from 12.30pm - 1.00pm and afternoon tea from 2.30pm - 3.00pm. There will be a range of maths tasks from across the school for you to explore in the hall. We look forward to seeing you there.
We would like to welcome Kate Woodward to Ahu, where she will teach Wednesday to Friday. She has already got to know many of our whānau and is looking forward to meeting more of you. Kate Millner has moved from teaching in Ahu to teaching in Hautonga. Kate M already knows many of you from her previous time teaching at Lyall Bay. Please pop in and say hello to them both if you have time.
A message from FoLBS: We would really appreciate more of our school community on our team. If you want to get involved come along and join our monthly meeting from the comfort of your own home!
Have a great week.

Acting Opportunity:
Liz Mullane and I have started the casting process for Nathalie Boltt and Emma Slade and their film “Holy Days” - script by Nathalie based on the novel of the same name by Dame Joy Cowley. This is a big role for a young Maori boy. Some details below…..
SYNOPSIS
It’s set in NZ in 1977 and is a charming story about a 7 year old boy and 3 elderly nuns who make a hasty road trip from the North Island to the South Island and back in an attempt to save their Convent from being demolished due to lack of resources. It is both funny and heart warming with the nuns’ relationships with each other and with the little boy at it’s core.
At this stage we are only looking for the role of Brian, the 7 year old boy.
Ethnicity - Maori / part Maori - Age: 7 (or small 8 / 9 year old)
Description: Brian is bright boy and deep thinker. Physically, he is quite delicate, and tends to be introverted, becoming easily exhausted by noise and too much ‘kid time’. At school he is is easily bored, because he grasps complex concepts and then goes on to daydream and shirk on his schoolwork. Despite possessing an adorable sense of humour, Brian is not a rough ’n tumble boy. He prefers listening to and attempting to join in with adult conversation (if only his vocabulary would keep up! ) which leads to his exclusion from games and feeling like a bit of an outsider and an easy target for bullies. He used to find solace in his mother, Paula, who understood him and made him feel like he had a place in the world, but when Paula dies, Brian is devastated and his life and behaviour quickly unravel. The changes at home only worsen his distress, as his father now has a new girlfriend, Liz, and his sisters seem to embrace her. Refusing to accept Liz as a replacement for his mum, Brian uses his vivid imagination to convince himself that there is a way to bring Paula back.
He increasingly seeks solace and companionship with the local nuns. Their tranquil environment contrasts with the chaos of his home. Moreover, the nuns' strong faith places them within the spiritual realm, which resonates with Brian's quest. Similar to Olive in the movie "Little Miss Sunshine," Brian sees no age difference between himself and his odd group of companions on the road trip. He values the nuns for accepting him as he is and providing him with the undivided attention he lacks elsewhere. Brian, in his innocence, sees the nuns, not as forgotten relics like the rest of his town saw them, but as interesting, playful, hilarious and at times even risk-taking trailblazers - just like him! Most importantly though, Brian believes that the nuns can drive him to the South Island to fulfil his mission of retrieving his mum from Aoraki and thus driving the imposter, Liz, from his home.
Filming will be largely in Wellington so given the logistics of age and hours that can be worked we will be very interested in people based closer to that area and also interested in twins. If someone is interested, please make contact with me and send a current photo of your child.

Paid Market Research Opportunities:
A bit about us:
We are a market research recruitment company based in Auckland. We undertake research projects nationwide and are often asked to find parents to take part in projects with us. ALL participants are PAID for taking part in the research and it can take the form of online or face to face groups or interviews, etc, depending on the project. As an example; a typical project could be a one-hour focus group (in person or via Zoom) for $80.
We are often looking to speak to parents and would therefore love to be able to reach out to the school audience to see if any are interested in taking part in paid research projects.
