We are already halfway through the term and hopefully we will get more fine days to be outside. The tamariki have coped well with all the rain, wearing clothes that they can be outside in, exploring the streams that are made, finding out more about water and what happens with weather. Our technology focus for this term has been enhanced by all the critical thinking that has happened with the changes in weather too.
Last week some of our Yr 4-6 swimmers went to the Eastern Zones Swimming Sports at Kilbirnie Pool. They all did so well, as always showing our school values of manaaki, whakapono, hiranga and pākiki, and our school expectations of Being a Learner, Being Responsible and Being Respectful. The results were: Baraa - 1st 25 m Yr 4 Boys Freestyle, 2nd 25 m Yr 4 Boys Breaststroke, 3rd 25m Yr 4 Boys Butterfly; Ciaran - 3rd 25m Yr 4 Boys Backstroke; Aurian - 2nd 25m Yr 4 Girls Breaststroke, 2nd 25m Yr 4 Girls Butterfly; Clara - 1st 25m Yr 5 Girls Breaststroke; Holly - 3rd 25m Yr 5 Girls Backstroke; Alfred - 3rd 25m yr 6 Boys Breaststroke, 3rd 25m Yr 6 Boys Backstroke; Nina R - 3rd 25m Yr 6 Girls Backstroke; Yr 4 Boys - 2nd Freestyle relay; Yr 6 Girls - 3rd Freestyle relay. An outstanding effort from everyone. Tino pai tō mahi.
We also had some of our tamariki take part in a Wellington school diving competition. Congratulations to Darcia who came 2nd in junior girls and Denim who was 3rd. Kai pai.
We are still gathering money for the Moveathon fundraiser, thank you. So far the total is $7,597.90! We will be using this money to enhance our school grounds. If you still have money at home, are still gathering it in, or are finalising the sponsors, please send it to school as soon as possible so we can get our final count.
Friends of Lyall Bay School (FoLBS) ran the Roller Disco on Saturday night. What a treat it was to be able to go along for free. Skate hire, drinks, and entry were all paid for by Friends. Everyone had such a great time. Friends, we thank you so much for the support you give to us all through your fundraising. A big thank you to all the helping hands that made the event so much easier too. The next fundraising event is 'Calendar Art'. Later this week kaiako will send photos of the art out to you on HERO, so you can see what you will be getting. On Monday, 2nd September, Friends will open up the orders, so you can order a calendar, notebook, sketchbook, mouse pad or gift cards with the artwork from your child being featured.
Electives start this week on Tuesday. There was a range of technology-focussed electives for tamariki to choose from. These started today so have a kōrero with your tamariki about their elective.
The newsletter is published every two weeks on Tuesdays. The newsletter is available on HERO and on our website. In each newsletter, there will be te reo Māori shared to help us all to develop our knowledge and understanding. This week is a focus on everyday phrases you can use: Maranga mai! - Rise and shine, Today's a new day - He rāhou tēnei, I au te moe? - Did you sleep well?, Haere ki te horoi - Go and have a wash.

Lyall Bay After School Care:
Lyall Bay After School Care (LBASC) offers a supervised after school childcare programme that is organised by parents to provide safe, quality after school care for all of our children.
We operate from the main hall in LBS between 3pm-6pm. Children attending go straight from their classroom to the hall in an environment they are familiar with.
We welcome children attending LBS, or siblings of these children who are currently attending Evans Bay Intermediate, and previously attended LBS.
Spaces are available on a permanent or casual basis for every day or as many days as you need each week.
LBASC is Out of School Care and Recreation (OSCAR) registered. OSCAR childcare subsidies are available through Work and Income for those families that meet the criteria.
For more information or to book in your child visit www.lbasc.net
Variety Children's Charity Raffle:
The lucky winner will drive away in a brand-new Ford Ranger Wildtrak Biturbo – NZ's number one selling ute! Meanwhile all proceeds will go to our Individual Grants Programme, providing crucial support to families living in material hardship ... many of whom are on our 3000-strong waiting list for Kiwi Kid Sponsorship
We have never seen such demand for our services. With the cost-of-living crisis showing no signs of letting up, more and more children in your school community are going without the basics they need to succeed. In purchasing a raffle ticket (or four!), you can help us to change that.
Tickets are available for just $25 and with only 12,000 tickets up for grabs, the odds are great.

Nga Manu Nature Reserve:
New Zealand’s wildlife is still in crisis with more than 4,000 of our native animals and plants threatened or at risk. Conservation Week is a chance to bring everyone together to do something, big or small to create change.
Every year Conservation Week sees thousands of New Zealanders getting involved through doing conservation activities at home or attending one of many events hosted across the country. Creating change can be big or small, when we pull together, we can make a big difference.
We have two very special events planned to celebrate Ngā Manu's commitment to conservation, both past and future.
It would be greatly appreciated if you could share these in your upcoming newsletters. Just 'right click' on the posters and you should be able to copy or save them.
See below for further details, including our special offer for Dads this Fathers Day (Sunday 1st September).
