The Whirlpools are a series of rapid whirlpools which surround almost the entirety of Kumate Island, any ship caught in these would easily be ripped to shreds leaving nothing but a few planks of wood. Any person caught in these would probably suffer a similar fate if they weren’t strong enough.
They drag stuff in and keep it there, they’re the chains that hold the unlucky souls that were dragged here stuck to the death trap.
No one knows how they appeared and no one dares to go close enough to find out, it’s a mystery that will most likely be left unsolved for all time.
The village of the ancient cannibalistic Kumate tribe, its basic homes and rocky walls have been left overgrown by moss and other varying plant life. If one was lucky they may find weapons or artifacts from the tribe though they’d be of little use as you wouldn’t be able to escape.
On the walls of some buildings lay old texts written in the language of the Kumate’s, easily translated if one were to have the skills to do so. It seems to detail how the tribe went extinct, the mass culling of the other species and the final message of the last Kumate tribe member.
The last line is written with what seems to be dried blood, only saying: “It wasn’t worth it.”
There is no real economy within the Kumate Island. Varying large amounts of useless beli cover the island. It’d be impossible to escape with it so it instead just sits there, waiting to lure in the next greedy soul in search of it.
The flora of the island is overgrown, taking over almost everything on the island. Due to having no predators, it’s pretty much become a self contained ecosystem of varying plant life mostly being covered in a somewhat rapidly spreading moss unique to the island.
There is stuff that many ecosystems experts may find interesting on the island, though due to the inedible nature of a lot of the plant life they’d most likely go hungry before finding any real secrets the plant life had to offer.
Kumate Island has never been a particularly prominent island, its only real notable feature being the housing of the cannibalistic Kumate tribe.
Over the last 100 years though even this fact began to change, the tides of the water literally began to differ around the island with it becoming a hotspot of whirlpools making it so any ship housing someone with a brain to not approach. The people on the island quickly began to grow more and more desperate for their favorite treat. The lack of human flesh began to drive the already somewhat insane tribe even more insane.
In their quest for satisfaction they hunted almost every species apart from themselves to extinction over a decade. Though this only led to more problems, no more animals lived on the island and it was impossible to fish due to the rapid whirlpools that surrounded them. Unsurprisingly infighting began to break out more and more frequently as the lack of meat drove many to attempt to eat their own kin.
The infighting increased and increased until the entire tribe was wiped out, all that was left of their existence was the old stories of elders who had managed to escape their grasp and the small village where they once resided.
Now, Kumate Island is little more than a death trap, an island scattered with skeletal remains of weary travelers who couldn’t escape the island once their ship got caught in the whirlpools.
Treasure of multiple crews may even lie here but would it ever be worth it to find out?
