The Rank and Tier System is a custom-made, automatic progression system. Our server bot LoBster tracks roleplay posts and keeps track of distinct roleplay groups that are listed within the bot. This means different crews and groups can be tracked just by those groups posting.
Rank is the power system in Lords of Blue. It is how strong your character hits and how fast they can run, but it does not pertain to the skill of a swordsman; that is determined by tier. It’s important to make the distinction between strength and skill, because they are equally important.
Every character starts at Rank 0. The highest rank your character can reach is Rank 10.
It’s important to understand that ranks are exponentially representative rather than linear. This means that if you were to scale the strength of the ranks on a line, the line would be exponential on a graph. This also means that it takes more effort to reach every new consecutive rank.
Some abilities have rank and tier requirements.
Crew rank is the rounded average number of milestones in a crew. It is used to determine how many NPCs a crew can have, how powerful the NPCs can be, and how well a crew fares in certain parts of the world.
Tier is the basis of skills, whether it be through swords or professions such as blacksmith or navigator. It is not the determinant of raw strength and speed; that is dependent on rank.
Some abilities have rank and tier requirements. Crafting is also dependent on tier.

A swordsman at Tier 5, Rank 0: "I can fillet an anchovy with a katana"
Milestones are the fundamental building blocks of Tier and Rank. When you make a roleplay post, you will earn points toward your next milestone. To reach new ranks and tiers, you must have the required number of milestones. Every time you reach a new milestone, you also attain a Fragment.
The table below shows the number of milestones required to reach each tier and rank.
To determine the number of points required to reach your desired tier and rank, you can use the calculator below.
You can also use this "Build Your Character" calculator if you are struggling to determine what tier and rank and how many fragments you need for the build you want.
This chart is intended to give an idea of the relative power of each rank. Do not take it as an accurate gauge of what exactly your character can do, because each character is different.
