Professional Learning Communities are rooted in the desire for teachers to become leaders in school improvement. Teachers use the time in PLCs to work together towards a common goal based on student mastery of essential standards.
The goal of a healthy Professional Learning Community is to identify essential skills, collaborate on assessment methods, engage in feedback, design curriculum and intervention, and provide professional development and improved pedagogy using student data to drive growth and development in teachers and students.
Student data is needed to make necessary adaptations to curriculum and methods of assessment. Education is a data rich environment, and we must actively analyze the validity and authenticity of the data we use to collaborate on interventions and enrichments. Data helps us answer the questions of:
What do we want the students to know?
How will we know if they know it?
What will we do if they don't know it?
What will we do if they've mastered it?
Students and teachers both benefit from an environment of collaboration. Innovation, resources, and new strategies are shared and an atmosphere of continuous learning for teachers is established. Collaborative Professional Learning Environment provide a safe space for teachers to share feedback, identify gaps, and create plans for intervention. Teacher workplace studies highlight the role of teacher working conditions, including how teachers learn from each other, as a marker for job satisfaction and student achievement.
The journey of improvement is shared through the collaboration of innovative peers and teachers.
