The red river hog or bushpig, is a wild member of the pig family living in Africa, with most of its distribution in the Guinean and Congolian forests. It is rarely seen away from rainforests, and generally prefers areas near rivers or swamps. Red river hogs' main predators include leopards, lions, spotted hyenas, eagle, rock pythons, and humans. Red river hogs typically live up to 15 years in human care. Red river hogs are most active during the night, resting in a self-excavated burrow deep within impenetrable vegetation during the day. When frightened, the striped piglets crouch and "play possum". As they get older, flight becomes the more frequent response.
