The axolotl, Ambystoma mexicanum, is a paedomorphic salamander closely related to the tiger salamander. Axolotls are unusual among amphibians in that they reach adulthood without undergoing metamorphosis. Instead of taking to the land, adults remain aquatic and gilled. They have four primary colors of white, black, gold speckles and fluorescence. Their gills can also come in different shades of red or pink. Axolotls make cute pets and their unique morphs are one of the main reasons why they are so popular.
