The hoatzin or hoactzin, is a species of tropical bird found in swamps, riparian forests, and mangroves of the Amazon and the Orinoco basins in South America. It is notable for having chicks that have claws on two of their wing digits. It is the only member of the genus Opisthocomus. The hoatzin's diet is made up of mostly leaves, although it does eat some fruit and flowers. Because its diet is mostly made up of leaves, the hoatzin has an unusual digestive system. It has a large crop that uses bacteria to break down the leaves that it eats. Hoatzins are the only living representatives of one of the most ancient lineages of birds, with origins about 64 million years ago. Weight: The mass of a Hoatzin can vary between 1.78 and 2.2 lbs (0.8 and 1 kg). Color: It is characterized by a blue face with bright red eyes, a reddish-brown rufous crest on its head, a long, sooty-brown tail, with the upper parts of wings being dark, sooty-brown and underparts being rich, rufous chestnut.
