Pinguicula vulgaris, the common butterwort, is a perennial carnivorous plant in the bladderwort family, Lentibulariaceae. The common butterwort, also known as bog violet or marsh violet, can be found in damp areas such as bogs, fens, wet heaths and rock crevices. Due to its low-nutrient habitat, the common butterwort has evolved into a carnivorous plant that supplements its diet with insects. The common butterwort is a fairly recognizable carnivorous plant. It has a rosette of leaves clustered at the base, out of which one to four stems grow, reaching up to 16 cm tall.
