Hi! My name is Rita Portugal, and I'm not a 'sporty' person. That said, I love sports and I think fair play and success are topics that are easy to discuss and are really meaningful to students. I decided to do this text set based on that. The essential question for my text set is: "What makes a ‘champion’ and how can we bring this concept to our everyday lives?"
This topic was built for A2-B1 students, but it can be used for A1 students, as long as they can have more free use of their first language. The texts were collected with high schoolers in mind and can bring light to many discussions they come into contact through news, social media and internet in general. My goal is to bring them into discussions of what are sports, mental and physical health, prejudice in sports (taking both racial and gender issues into consideration) and the meaning of success and winning. That said, there's also space for fun and learning about games and sports from other cultures as well.
At the end of the plan, Students Will Be Able To identify sports vocabulary from discussions, categorize vocabulary for sports and grammar, experience and compare games from their country to other games, learn how to give instructions, discuss what the word “champion” means in sports and everyday life. I hope this text set might help with your classes and build student's critical thinking skills. Enjoy!
