For my Final Project, I have created a text set on the topic "Diversity is all that matters". Throughout this collection of texts, the students will be able to engage in discussions on different genres, such as News, poem/songs, videos, as well as cartoons, graffiti, and campaigns.
The motivation for the range of text types comes from the idea that, being multiple, we learn in various ways, and we learn better when faced with topics that raise our interest. Taking into consideration the fact that our community back in Brazil is increasingly facing the possibility to discuss this topic, since each year, more and more students come out as queer, non-binary, or trans, the topic comes handy, for it provides the learners with real life situations in order to endorse their critical thinking.
With this in mind, the topic brings to light the ideas of "Cultures" and "Communities", from the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. Emphasizing the 2nd, 5th, and 6th TESOL principles.
The texts are meant to be worked by students in the 2nd grade of high school (15-17 years old, 30-40 students per group). In my school, we meet twice a week, with a 50 minute timing for each class. The students' proficiency levels vary between A2 and B1, so, the texts chosen are multi-leveled for this purpose.
Furthermore, given the variety of levels, each text will be presented with suggested applications that may vary depending on the development of the classes.
