INTRODUCTION
Multimodalities of Race Prejudice is a text set designed to help students explore and reflect on the different ways racism appears in our world. Racial prejudice is a real and painful problem in many places, including our own schools. This collection brings together poems, songs, images, news, and performances that show how racism can be felt, seen, and challenged in daily life. By engaging with these materials, students are invited to understand the impact of racism and consider how we can build a more equal and respectful society.
The main goal of this project is to raise awareness and encourage reflection. The activities included show how powerful stories, visual art, and spoken words can help us talk about race, identity, injustice, and strength. Through these lessons, students are not only learning English, but also developing their ability to express emotions, opinions, and hopes for a better future — one where racial equity is not a dream, but a shared goal.
This theme was chosen because most of the students in my school are Black, and unfortunately, we have experienced moments of racial conflict involving both students and teachers. This text set aims to open space for safe, honest conversations. It is a way to promote respect, pride, and awareness, helping students feel seen, heard, and supported in their learning journey.
The texts in this project can be used independently or as a complete unit, depending on the class needs. Each text includes a suggested activity, but teachers are free to adapt or skip them. The language level required is between A2 and B1, making the material accessible while still offering meaningful opportunities to grow. I hope this work helps teachers and students talk about race in thoughtful, courageous, and empowering ways.
Our history shows us more than suffering. It gives us examples of strength and hope.
Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Park is located in Topeka, Kansas. And that is where the fight against educational segregation started in the United States. A visit to this site was part of the reason why this theme was chosen.
