For the PDPI Final Project, I have created a Text Set with 10 differents types of textual genres to discuss about the theme WOMEN IN STEM AND HISTORY. Here I suggest a sequence that the teacher can follow. The set begins with images of notable women in the Medieval Period, Modernity and today: Cristine de Pizan, Amelia Earhart and Mayana Zatz, to reflect on the role of women in different periods. The issue continues in the quote ‘Christine de Pizan's Thoughts about Women's Education’. To deepen the discussion about Women in STEM and History, the e-book “Good Night Stories to Rebel Girls” is a great strategy, because it contains 100 short stories about notable women. To bring the discussion closer to the students' reality, I propose listening to the podcast “As verdades sobre a vida das mulheres do cangaço” about the Women’s Cangaço. After, I propose an activity (choice board) about Marie Curie's video. It's crucial to discuss and reflect on women scientists. To further the research about women in STEM, a scientific article "Breaking Barriers: Women Leaders in STEM," was attached. In addition to the discussions, the text encourages girls to invest in STEM career, which is which is constantly growing. The scientific article can be compared with the charge "Double Female Journey," in item 9, to development students' critical thinking about the challenges women face in the face of double shifts and gender inequalities. At the end, there are two activity suggestions based on the film Mulan (2020), reflecting on the prejudice against women in the military. One of the activities proposes a discussion of the Chinese legend "Mulan" and the historical facts about Joan of Arc. These topics can be worked on together with e-book "As Super Garotas Medievais," attached in item 10.
These selected texts will focus on World-Readiness Standards for Language Learning in Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities, TESOL Principles 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 are emphasized. These texts were selected for high school (grades 3rd/ages 16-19 years old) performing at a beginning and intermediate proficiency level. My current school in the state of Pernambuco serves approximately one thousands students, each class there are 45 students. This material is directed to students and professors, because it can contribute with the formation of the teaching, impact positively in their classrooms and promotes students' critical thinking about women's history, their performance in STEM, and gender issues in education.
