Introduction
For the PDPI Final Project, I have created a Text Set with the theme “Standing up for what is right”. Here I suggest a sequence that the teacher can follow. The set begins with an article from The New York Times newspaper called Confronting Our New Reality, which discusses Climate change and the environment. The second text presents a Youtube video about Civil rights, focusing on creating a more just society. A website created to discuss and concern people about bullying is used in the third text to make students understand better the definitions, the kinds and how to protect from bullying. In the fourth text we suggest an infographic about Women’s rights. It shows statistics on how different opportunities are for men and women. The fifth text presents a photograph of the Favela of Paraisópolis and its wealthy neighbor Morumbi, in Sâo Paulo, Brazil, to show economic inequality, especially in big cities. A TED Talk Video presents a reflection about Human rights in the sixth part, trying to make students become more active and engaged citizens. The seventh text shows a charge about access to education aiming to promote a discussion about the importance of education to reach better opportunities in life. Violence against LGBTQIA+ individuals is the theme discussed in the eighth text, showing an audio about violent deaths of LGBTQIA+ in Brazil. The ninth text presents song lyrics to discuss the relation between Politics and social injustice. The last text presents a poem called “I know why the caged bird sings”, written by Maya Angelou, who was an American memoirist, poet, and civil rights activist.
These selected texts will focus on World-Readiness Standards for Language Learning in "Communication", “Connections”, and "Communities" and TESOL Principles 1, 3, 5 and 6 are emphasized. These texts were selected for a Language School Center (from 13 years old on) performing at an intermediate proficiency level. My current school is in the state of Piauí, which serves approximately two thousand students who meet twice a week for 90 minutes of class. This public school offers different language courses, such as English, Spanish, French, Portuguese and The Brazilian Sign Language.
