Whanau (noun): extended family, family group, a familiar term of address to a number of people - the primary economic unit of traditional Māori society. Whanau does not mean family. It refers to the core collectivist economic unit of traditional Maori society, better known in Western philosophy as communism. ‘Whanau’ opposes individual property ownership, denies law of contracts, negates return for individual effort in favour of communal wealth distribution, etc.
