Students create 2 lists. First one with their strengths, characteristics, they feel describe them in their real life. If needed, the teacher can support this activity by having a discussion prior making this list, about different strengths and attributions, what they value about themselves, what makes them happy. After making the first list, the students continue with preparing characteristics they are presented with on social media. They then compare the two lists and consider the potential differences or similarities they see.
You can use the printing material listed below.
If the students struggle with these activities, one of the possibilities is to role play or discuss one characteristic, 1st in real life and then as they present it in their social media presence. For example, kindness. how does that show in their real life, then role play or discuss an exaggerated version of that for social media.
After the self-reflection activity, invite participants to take a few moments of quiet to breathe and notice any thoughts, feelings, or insights that arose during the process. Encourage them to gently tune into what stood out most in their reflections—without judgment, just awareness.
This activity helps students reflect on their real-life strengths and how they perceive themselves versus how they present themselves on social media. By creating and comparing two lists—one of personal qualities they identify with and another of traits they project online—students develop greater self-awareness and critical thinking about identity, authenticity, and social influence. It encourages thoughtful discussion about values, self-esteem, and the impact of digital representation on their sense of self.
To provide participants with structured time and guidance to explore their inner thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and personal growth in a safe, supportive space.
