4th Week of June
4th Week of June
"Juneteenth" is a compound of "June" and "nineteenth". It is an holiday to celebrate the emancipation of the last remaining enslaved African American in the United States. Emancipation Declaration is an executive order signed by Abraham Lincoln in 1863 that declares “all persons held as slaves” to be free individuals. However, it was not until the end of Civil War, in 1865, that the news actually started to spread across the United States. As many plantation owners were against this order, the last case was on June 19th, 1865 in Texas. This year, Juneteenth celebrates it 155th anniversary and along with the Black Lives Matter movement, marches and protests are planned all across the United States.
Contents that people can easily follow that home were on YouTube US trending list this week. The first video was about easy art crafts by Moriah Elizabeth, and it was listed on the 9th place with 2.6 M views. This is the fourth video of the ‘Art Things to do When Bored’ series, and she made a DIY stained glass with things everyone can get at home. The other video was from the channel Ted Nivison and it gained 334k views. He tried baking a cake using only gardening tools, such as flower pots, mini shovels and more. It is notable that while most of the trending videos are from huge channels with at least 1M , his channel has 463k subscribers.
On this week’s YouTube US Trending list, there were 2 types of recipe videos. The sweet rolls recipe video was sponsored by a mobile game. At first, recipe channel advertising a mobile game did not seem natural. However, the connection between the game and the sweet rolls in the video were quite natural and entertaining. The second video was about tips on making a burger by “a burger scholar”. The viewers stated that despite the amount of burgers he has made during his life (as he is an expert in burgers), he looks so excited to be making another burger.
<Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs>, which is a Korean animated movie released in 2019, was reviewed by a movie reviewer Saberspark. Although it is a movie that says everyone is beautiful in their own ways, the issue was in its marketing. The poster shows one female character in skinny and overweight shapes, and next to the character it says, “What if Snow White was no longer beautiful and the 7 Dwarfs not so short?” This became a huge controversy when it was first revealed in the US, as it was sending out a message to its main viewers, children, that being fat is ugly. Saberspark criticizes this and explains how the plot has an opposite message to the poster. He adds that it is an underrated movie due to bad marketing, and recommends his viewers to watch it.
As many different games were released since May, YouTubers began to upload contents that are related to those games. The first video was from the channel Girlfriend Reviews, with 951k subscribers. The video was about commenting on the reveal video of the Playstation 5. The second video was about making a Mincraft house in real life, which was uploaded by the channel Unspeakable.
Banzz, who used to be one of the top mukbang YouTubers in Korea, uploaded an apology video about his past actions. This video went straight up to 2nd place on YouTube Korea’s trending list. This is his first video in about 6 months, and people are presuming that Banzz is planning for the comeback to YuTube and Afreeca TV. Regarding his video, there will be further explanation on the next part of this report.
[Nareum_TV], who is one of the popular Korean mukbang YouTubers had made a giant black sugar bubble tea. The video went up to the 6th place on YouTube Korea’s trending list, and gained 2M views in a short period of time. In the video, the glass broke and 50L of milk tea was spilled on the floor. Although she completely messed the content, Nareum laughed about it with her family and soon started out another content with the same bubble tea. Despite the fact that this video was a part of the promotion of a DIY bubble tea product, Nareum made it so entertaining that the viewers did not express any negative comments about doing an advertisement. This video received more love than her original contents.
Thankyou BUBU’s video on diet snacks were on the 30th place of YouTube Korea’s trending list. There is a constant demand on diet contents, such as workout routines or diet meals, due to the prolonged quarantine and the pandemic. There are many other videos that recommend diet snacks but Thankyou BUBU’s video provided their own strict requirements on diet products. The video does not include any advertisement but every information is based on their real experience so the viewers tend to believe that Thankyou BUBU are honest and caring YouTubers, who does not just seek for profit.
Angle Jjung TV, who was selected as YouTube Korea’s Creator on the Rise on the first week of June, finally was able to have her video listed on the trending list as well. Her channel now has 240k subscribers and her recent videos have gained more than 400k views, which is about 4 times her usual views. It is true that there are some viewers who are interested in her outer appearance than her fishing skills, but her constant effort to try out new contents and regularly update videos has also played a big role in putting her channel under spotlight.
There was a similarity between popular cooking videos: the angle. The first video is a video from the channel “Binging with Babish”, which has 7.15M subscribers. His recent video of baking Sweetrolls gained 1.5 M views in just one day. The second and the third video is from the channel “취미로 요리하는 남자 Yonam”, who uploads cooking videos at home and has 645k subscribers. These are the two most popular videos from his channel, which reached 3.4M and 2M views respectively. The last video is from the channel “하루한끼 one meal a day”, which got 1.5M views in 4 days. Have you noticed how the shooting angle in these three videos are similar? The video does not show the person, but mainly focuses on the table and the cooking process. Moreover, the explanation of the recipe is minimalized, with a monotone voice or even substituted with simple subtitles. The videos seem to focus more on the sound(as if it is an ASMR) and displaying the cooking process in a rather simple but aesthetic way. This type of video style has become prevalent amid various cooking channels, whether they deal with professional recipes or easy home cooking. The reason for such change in the concept of cooking videos is that the viewers started to enjoy cooking videos as a part of entertainment, not just informative content. Whether they will actually follow the recipe is not really important for the current viewers; what is more important for them is whether it is enjoyable to watch.

On top of this week’s YouTube Korea Trending list, there were two Afreeca BJ/Youtubers, Banzz and Shuki, who shows how important risk management is.
Banzz was one of Korea’s first generation mukbang Youtubers who once gained more than 3M subscribers. His nice attitude and diligence was one of the biggest reasons the viewers liked him. He became so famous that he became one of the first Youtubers to appear on a TV show. Banzz also started a diet pill business but few months later he was arrested for false advertising. He did not provide any further explanation on this issue on any of his social media. He kept on uploading videos on his channel, and often deleted hateful comments or even closed the comment section. His channel changed the target to foreigners and began uploading food ASMRs with English subtitles. However, it did not turn out well and he kept on losing subscribers and views. Early this week, he uploaded an apology video but the viewers are still against him. Those who left comments were mostly Banzz’s previous fans, who expressed disappointment on his attitude after the false advertising incident. Many viewers presume that Banzz will be coming back, but it is unclear whether he will win back support from his previous fans.
Another BJ/YouTuber having a hard time due to unwise behavior is Shuki. Shuki is a mukbang BJ/YouTuber, who once gained more than 2M subscribers with her bright and bubbly personality. However, she was criticized for a past incident with BJ Chulgoo and Changhyun in 2017 and some fans were complaining about how her attitude toward the viewers changed. While it is common for BJs to mention all the viewers who donate during their live broadcast, Shuki began to not mention those who donate less than certain amount. More and more viewers were disappointed at her attitude, left hate comments, Shuki would criticize or block those comments, and this vicious cycle continued for quite a while. Last September, Shuki uploaded an apology video of her past actions and announced that she will be taking a break to look back on herself. After about nine months, she has announced her comeback and started uploading dance covers and vlogs. Viewers are leaving both hate and encouraging comments, and people are focusing on Shuki’s future moves.
Banzz and Shuki are two examples that show how important risk management is for YouTubers. The most important lesson we can learn from them is that an apology should be made in a timely manner, and whatever the format is (whether it is a video or a post), it should clearly address one’s fault, the reason behind such actions, and what kind of effort will be made to make up for this mistake.
“Kim Sa Won Sae-kki” channel was chosen as this week’s YouTube Korea Creator on the Rise. “Sae-kki” means “3 meals” in Korean, but it also sounds like a Korean slang for “guy”. This channel introduces great restaurants in Seoul, especially those with cheap price and tasty food. Although the channel has just opened this January, recent videos have reached over 100k views. The comments show at which point the viewers were attracted to the video, and it was the length of the video, Kim Sa won’s simple but relatable comments, and unique content. Most of his videos are short, which are only three to four minutes. Since the video is short, Kim Sa Won talks briefly and fast. He only describes the food and its taste and does not add on any other comments. As other restaurant reviews are at least five minutes long and contains unnecessary information, Kim Sa Won’s concise and witty comments draw the viewers’ attention. Moreover, the main concept of his channel is a businessman. “Sawon” means “employee” in Korean, and most of the restaurants he visits mostly have menus that go well with alcohol, This could be another reason why his channel got famous among all those numerous restaurant review channels, as all his contents have a strong and coherent concept.
It has been about a month after singer Rain and Lee Hyori appeared on MBC’s variety show, <놀면 뭐하니?>.The show airs on Saturday evenings, around 6:30 PM (KST), and after the show, the NAVER trending search list is always covered with keywords related to the program.
