Object Classification and Count
Big Ideas
Numerical quantities, calculations, and measurements can be estimated or analyzed by using appropriate strategies and tools.
Mathematical relations and functions can be modeled through multiple representations and analyzed to raise and answer questions.
Data can be modeled and used to make inferences.
Essential Questions
What does it mean to estimate or analyze numerical quantities?
What makes a tool and/or strategy appropriate for a given task?
How can data be organized and represented to provide insight into the relationship between quantities?
How does the type of data influence the choice of display?
Count the Objects and Say the Number
Subitize to 10. Subitize is the ability to tell the number of objects in a set, quickly, without counting. In this subitizing song name the numbers in each set of dots, ten frames and fingers. Subitizing develops math fluency, when students recognize sets without having to count each object and it helps develop number sense and the ability to perform mental math. In this version of Subitize Rock we show the numeral after each set for reinforcement. Practice your subitizing with this subitize song. Subitize to 10.
Counting Memory Match Game
In this classic game of memory, students will strengthen their memory skills while matching the card with the correct digit to the corresponding card with a picture of the same number of items. Click HERE to print this matching game.
Classifying Objects
The worksheet provides students with a cut and paste activity to practice sorting the objects. Students will practice identifying the categorizes when they sort the objects. This allows for a variety of answers that can work such as animals or pets, fruit or food. Click HERE for this printable worksheet.
Which has more?
This activity practices the concept of more and fewer when counting and ordering. Click on the picture to download this activity.
