Measurement
Big Ideas
Numerical quantities, calculations, and measurements can be estimated or analyzed by using appropriate strategies and tools.
Measurement attributes can be quantified, and estimated using customary and non- customary units of measure.
Essential Questions
What does it mean to estimate or analyze numerical quantities?
When is it is appropriate to estimate versus calculate?
What makes a tool and/or strategy appropriate for a given task?
Why does “what” we measure influence “how” we measure?
In what ways are the mathematical attributes of objects or processes measured, calculated and/or interpreted?
How precise do measurements and calculations need to be?
Pencil Plot
Collect 10 pencils; measure the length of each to the nearest centimeter. Using a line plot marked in centimeters, mark an X above the number that represents the measurements. Answer the questions listed to analyze your data.
Length Word Problems
Create length word problems following the criteria listed. Exchange with a partner to solve.
Gummy Worm Stretch
Using candy gummy worms, stretch the gummy worm out and using a ruler measure its length. Measure the gummy worm un-stretched. Then compare your findings.
Estimating Meter Measures
Find five items to measure the length, width, and height. Record your findings
Then write three facts about the data you collected.
Gallon Bot
A picture for a reference and to be colored with all the capacity conversions listed on the robots parts.
Measuring Capacity
A sheet to practice capacity conversions using their chart or Gallon Bot picture
Measuring Capacity
Practice using the capacity measurements with this simple art project.
Measuring Games
If you click the picture it will take you to a page that has online games to practice measurement skills.
Measurement Scavenger Hunt
After students have become familiar with units of measurement, have students work in pairs or groups of three. Assign each group a unit of measurement of length. (I have used a variety such as, one centimeter, one meter, one foot, one inch. As well as more challenging thinking with 5 centimeters, 12 inches, 2 feet, etc.) And of course, more than one group can have the same unit of measurement. Students record what their assigned measurement is on the paper. They really like this activity.
Measurement Scavenger Hunt
In this activity students have read each question, find the object to measure & list the units of measurement asked for each object.
